AR AIMS AP Calculus Newsletter
Volume 3, Issue 1
Take a Deep Breath....
Well fast-forward to a year later - despite the hope we all had when the school year ended , not much has changed in terms of the unknowns for this year. But I know you all will do your best and your students will be so appreciative of your dedication and compassion during this (once again) crazy school year.
I would also like each of you to make a promise to yourself to try and make time to NOT think about school/grading papers/etc. a few nights a week. Even write it in your schedule if you need to! We all deserve to be the best we can for our students, colleagues, and our families.
The AR AIMS consultants and I care about each of you and we are here to help with whatever you may need. Don't hesitate to email, call, or text (even if you just need to vent!) anytime.

Bryan Passwater Resources being added to the AR AIMS Google Site! If you were unable to attend the AR AIMS Fall Workshop last year, you missed an amazing session by Bryan Passwater. Bryan shared A TON of resources with us - and writes really great activities. There are lots of card sorts, quiz-quiz-trades, Calculus clue!!, and many others. I have added all of the files to Unit 1 - Limits, and will get units 2 and 3 out by next week. Make sure to look at his advanced limits activities - he always has a knack for giving extra practice for things students struggle with the most. | Start with Local Linearity on Day 1 I want you all to repeat after me.... I promise not to begin Calculus with an algebra/pre-cal review... I promise not to begin Calculus with an algebra/pre-cal review..... It is really hard to fight the instinct that you should begin the year reviewing the skills from previous courses. (I can hear you all telling me - But my kid's can't factor!!!). Begin the First day of class with the idea of local linearity, and how this relates to limits and calculus. It is a great way to bring these to ideas together, and will really set the tone for the school year. Calc-medic has a great day 1 activity on local linearity, and their Day 2 activity (using data to approximate a limit) is fantastic as well. Calc Medic Day - Local Linearity Calc Medic Day 2 - Estimating Limits Another tip for the first day of school - skip the paperwork!!! Your students will have so much more fun on their first day and will remember this throughout the year. The first day or two in your class really set the tone throughout the year (as I'm sure you all know!) | Desmos - Not just for virtual learning I am still blown away at the amount of free Desmos Activities out there for all levels of Math. Most are engaging, visual, and really help a variety of learners by offering multiple representations of topics that just can't be seen through a textbook or slideshow. Please take a look at the AR AIMS Desmos Collection - I will continue updating it throughout the year! |
