December 2021

Letter from the Board

December!! I can hardly believe it! This time of year is always so fast-paced, festive, and busy. Many of our businesses count on November and December for the bulk of their annual revenue, others are working hard to wrap up their fiscal year, and many are able to sit back and enjoy the lights and music that soundtracks this season. Whatever your hustling for these days, I hope you are filled with joy, friendship, good food, and cheer.

Here at the chamber I have a lot to be grateful for. Top of the list? A supportive and active board of directors! As many of you know, the chamber has operated without an office manager since August. There has been a significant shuffle to prioritize responsibilities, projects, and daily tasks. I've sent out messages to the board when I need help, support, or bolstering and they have never once shied from the challenge. It's humbling to work for an organization that is so focused on community betterment. It's wonderful to have that at the center of my daily work. That said, bettering the community literally takes a village and I'm reminded regularly that we have some of the very best at the table.

I'm also so very grateful to be working alongside Alyssa Auten. Alyssa joined the chamber/ tourism team this summer as a part time resource. I'm awed regularly at her talents and ability to make things I find difficult and laborious seem effortless. She's a gift and the entire chamber family gets to benefit from her many skills.

I'm also grateful to get to work alongside so many of you! Just yesterday I wrapped up my day on a conference call with people spanning so many areas of our community. Represented was Chisago Age Well, Community Education, ISD2144 Educators, and community volunteers. It struck all of us as we were wrapping up our meeting how unique this group was. Our project spanned multiple geographic areas of our community, addressed the needs of a large age span, considered the needs of businesses, and fundamental broadband connection. In this small group, we all arrived at the table as colleagues, tirelessly working to better the connection and lives of our friends and neighbors. I had a moment of thinking, "This is my job!" It's a privilege to get to work alongside so many wonderful people in our community.

I could go on. I show up to work everyday feeling lucky that I get to support and work alongside the business community of Chisago Lakes. If you find yourself feeling festive (or not) this season, I hope you'll stop in for a cup of coffee and some conversation. That truly is the best part of my job and I welcome you anytime.

I genuinely wish you and yours the very best this holiday season!

Sincerely,

Katie Malchow

Chisago Lakes Chamber Executive Director
