ATTENDANCE MATTERS
HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED: BUILD THE HABIT OF GOOD ATTENDANCE
Every Day Matters
DID YOU KNOW?
- Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks
- Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with a social issue at school or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
- Missing 10%, or about 20 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success
- Attendance is an important life skill that will help your student graduate from college and keep a job
IS MY ABSENCE EXCUSED?
EXCUSED ABSENCES
- Participation in a district or school approved activity or instructional program
- Illness (doctor's note may be required to support such absences)
- Family emergency, including, but not limited to a birth or a death in the family
- Professional appointment (such as doctor, dentist, counselor, court)
- Religious observance
- Post-secondary, technical school or apprenticeship program visitation or scholarship interview
- State-recognized search and rescue activities consistent with RCW 28A.225.055
- Absence directly related to the student's homeless status
- Absence resulting from a disciplinary/corrective action
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S GOOD ATTENDANCE?
- Make school attendance an EXPECTATION.
- Encourage meaningful after-school ACTIVITIES, including sports and clubs.
- TALK to your student’s teachers and counselor if you notice sudden changes in behavior.
- Help your child maintain DAILY ROUTINES, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try NOT to schedule dental or medical appointments during the school day.
- Stay on top of academic progress by routinely checking Family Access.
