GROWTH
Extended Observations
The Extended Observation serves as an opportunity to capture what you have been working on throughout the year. The timing of the Extended is purposeful because it is during the time of the year when a teacher has had time to practice new instructional moves, fine tune certain moves, and build upon strengths.
As appraisers it is exciting to observe the instructional growth and thoughtfulness of our educators, during the extended time we are in the classroom.

ARMS New Information
National Assistant Principal Week
Please join me in recognizing our wonderful Ranger Assistant Principals by showing your appreciation. However big or small, they deserve the thoughtfulness.
Our AP's work diligently and are committed to this school and supporting the vision and mission. This role does not come with many thanks and yet their positive contributions to the school are felt everyday.
I truly am thankful for each of them and I look forward to this week in which they are officially honored.
Student Perception Surveys
We will give the teacher survey Wednesday April 19th. It will take place during 2nd period. You will use the same switch partner you used during ACP’s. If you didn’t have a switch partner, you will be assigned one. All teacher of records will be a part of the survey. NOT EVERY STUDENT WILL HAVE A SURVEY. Students who don’t have surveys can read, draw, do a word search or an assignment that keeps them occupied. More information to come…Please stay tuned to your email.

Spotlight on Mrs. Taylor-Glenn - Operation Excellence: Team
An ARMS Ranger writes:
I'd like to send a spotlight to our very own principal Ms. Taylor-Glenn who never settles for nothing less than the best. She keeps giving her time to those students that need a second chance while giving up her afternoon. She is a great leader because great leaders are like candles; they burn themselves up to give others light! We are blessed with an awesome leader.... Keep up the hard work we need you.
ARMS TARDY DATA
We did have no bells Wed. - Friday and considering this adjustment students did a good job ensuring on time arrival to class. I was so proud of how we together as a team that this did not disrupt the flow of the day. We had 1300 students traveling down the main hallway and they did fantastic!
Teachers, monitors, security team, administrators, and Attendance Office, thank you for your diligent support of our students being safe and purposeful in the hallway.
Operation Excellence Teaching Highlights
Instructional Highlight: Ms. Leake
Ms. Leake's excellence in teaching students and peers the benefits of highly focused data driven instructional practices is paying off! Students are well aware of what they need to know and how to reach mastery. Other team members are also adding tools to their instructional tool box because of what they have been able to glean from Ms. Leake's expert knowledge in RTI.

Why Learn Math?
In this interview with Tom Bartlett in The Chronicle of Higher Education, mathematician Eugenia Cheng (scientist in residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago) acknowledges that math is not taught very well in many schools, and that she herself hated math as a child. “The reason math classes are so boring is because of the pressure teachers are under to bring students to a certain level,” says Cheng. “The only way they know to get students to pass those tests is to drill and drill and drill. And that’s not interesting for the people struggling and it’s not interesting for the people who can already do it. I was very lucky because my mother showed me things that were fantastic about math outside of class. I was inoculated against boring math classes by things that my mother showed me, and that led me to believe deep down that there was going to be something better waiting for me at the end of it.”
Responding to the argument that school math should focus more on real-world applications than advanced algebra and calculus, Cheng says there are three basic reasons for studying math:
- Practical applications, such as being able to compute interest on a mortgage and understanding statistics to see through misrepresentations;
- Preparing to enter science and engineering careers;
- Learning how to think clearly.
Cheng believes the first is actually the most boring. “It’s not interesting to learn how mortgages work until it’s time to get a mortgage, and then it becomes rather important,” she says. But the third is the one she believes applies to everyone. Here’s her analogy:
“It’s become accepted that for most people, physical fitness is a good thing. We know that good core strength helps with the rest of our strength. It’s the same with math. Yes, you can just work on your biceps or run up stairs a lot. With math, you can train yourself to understand how compound interest works, but if the core of your brain works – well, I truly believe I can learn any other part of math or any part of science if I really feel like it, because I understand how to think. It’s less direct but much more widely relevant.”

A6-7), available to subscribers at http://bit.ly/2oC4BKd; see Cheng’s TED talk at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfdFw3hXkf0 and her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA402F5K47o; Cheng can be reached at echeng4@saic.edu.
