News from Lions Park School
Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
Winter has most certainly come to our area! Thank you for your patience during drop off and pick up. I know the driving and walking conditions have been difficult with the continuous cold and snow. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring that all students are safe at arrival and dismissal.
Despite the weather outside, we have been warm and busy inside Lions Park. There is lots of hard work and learning in our classrooms that is free from the distractions of nice weather, holidays and the end of the year. We are wrapping up our benchmark assessments that were described in the last newsletter. We use the data we collect from benchmark assessments to plan for instruction. At our last half day for staff development, most of our teachers were learning about features and reports they can use from our recent MAP testing. There are many ways the student results can be used to provide targeted instruction and opportunities for practice in areas of identified need. This work will be continued and additional data sources will be available for data days the first week of February.
In addition to many exciting things happening academically in our school, we continue to focus on developing students socially and emotionally. Throughout the year classrooms have weekly class meetings. Some of these meetings use lessons from the district adopted Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Other meetings are used to resolve issues that arise in the particular classroom. A new addition this year is that we have a teacher committee that designed some additional targeted lessons to help students prevent, identify and handle bullying situations that arise. This month the classes are defining bullying and talking about what it looks like, sounds like and feels like. Next month students will learn to differentiate between rude, mean and bullying behaviors. We have noticed that students sometimes erroneously refer to rude or mean behaviors as bullying, and we want them to be able to appropriately label what is happening. None of these behaviors are allowed at Lions Park, but the way that we react to mean or rude behavior can be different than how we respond to bullying behavior.
One additional thing that will be happening is that our fourth and fifth grade students will be taking the 5 Essentials Survey between January 28th and February 8th. As part of the Illinois Every Student Succeeds Act Plan, the school report card now includes a variety of data pieces that describe the quality of schools. One of these data points is the student administration of the 5 Essentials Survey. This survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success. This is an opportunity for us to find out the student perceptions of our school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
