"We exist so children can excel."

What We're Learning in Challenge

3rd/4th Grade

Students are doing an amazing job presenting their oral share topics. It's been both refreshing and rewarding to observe the varied strategies that they're incorporating. Trust me, I'm not the only one enjoying this time each day. More than once I've heard this familiar refrain, "I love this!" Perhaps we have some future orators among us.

This week, students should be prepared to discuss the following:

My Dream for the World: Tell us what you would change in the world that would help all people. Why? How? We will be discussing Dr. Martin Luther King and his dream.

Next Week's Share Topic

Descriptive Hints: Put an item in a box or bag. Give five descriptive sentences that will appeal to your listeners' senses. Let's see if anyone can guess what it is based on your carefully thought-out sensory details.

5th/6th Grade

This past week's snow days and delays have made for some very disjointed reading of The House on Mango Street. Nonetheless, students have remained flexible throughout. Here's to hoping (despite what the forecast says) that Old Man Winter isn't too harsh on us this week.

During our studies of Martin Luther King Day, we presented a Readers' Theater of the actual "I Have A Dream" speech that was given on August 28, 1963. I can assure you this: this talented group of students has a command of the English language like none other. It was so impressive to hear them read.

Spelling Bee

On Friday, January 22, we will hold a spelling bee. As a Challenge class, we're representing well. The following students will be participating in the bee from the 5th grade: Brant Ertel, Rafe Reece, Josie Rolfes, and Bethany Melugin. Kaylin Knapp and Gracie Singer will represent us from the 6th grade class and J.D. Stokes will serve as an alternate participant. Good luck to all!
