Inclement Weather Instructions for BSD Employees
If a decision is made to delay or cancel school, we will typically make this decision by 5:15 a.m. and post information on the District website by 5:30 a.m.
When any inclement weather event occurs the Superintendent and designated District administrators are frequently communicating. We will drive the roads early in the morning to evaluate current travel conditions, check in with our neighboring school districts and confer with our weather service to better understand the latest weather forecast. All of this happens before any decisions are made.
When schools are closed and weather conditions remain unsafe to travel, we will continue to gather information throughout the day in order to determine whether schools will be open or closed the following day.
View the document below for:
- When all District schools & facilities are closed
- When there is a 2-hour delayed opening of school and buses are on snow routes
- When school is on time and buses are on snow routes
- When an early dismissal of school is necessary

Thao Do-Gwilliam Oregon Assistant Principal of the Year
Thao Do-Gwilliam, Assistant Principal at Stoller Middle School has been named the 2019 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Confederation of School Administrators (COSA).
Thao has been an Assistant Principal at Highland Park Middle School since 2014, and this year supports teachers and students at Stoller Middle School. Thao is a champion for student achievement and teacher development. She worked with District administrators to implement a three-year writing sequence for all students grades 6-8 at Highland Park. Thao fully immersed herself in professional development to become a subject matter expert to fully support teachers in the building. She also supported the collaborative co-teaching model for English Language Development (ELD) and Humanities teachers that has led to increased academic performance for students and worked to bring AVID strategies school-wide.
“As an educational leader, I feel one of Thao’s greatest strengths is her ability to lead by example. When she asks staff to engage in professional learning, she becomes an expert. Thao’s work ethic and strong commitment to staff and students results in a high degree of trust. This trust is an essential foundation for staff to be willing to take risks and try new things in their classrooms,” says Curtis Semana, Principal at Highland Park Middle School.
Congratulations, Thao!
Community Partnership Team Meeting
More than 200 community partners and school leaders met at Beaverton Foursquare Church on Friday, November 16, 2018 for the first District-level Community Partnership Team meeting of the 2018-2019 school year. Superintendent Grotting and School Board Chair, Becky Tymchuk, opened the meeting. Teacher on Special Assignment Angela Healow spoke about social emotional learning and the role of student success coaches.
Two outstanding community partnerships in the Beaverton School District were spotlighted; the Urban Gleaners food support program at three District high schools and Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District’s partnership with the BSD HELP Center.
Following the presentations, teams had the opportunity to meet and to develop their visions and needs and discuss how community partners could empower all students to achieve post-high school success.

Future Ready Micro:bit Make-A-Thon at Beaverton HS
On Friday November 9, ninety-six 4th and 7th grade students from around BSD chose to spend their day off participating in the first ever Future Ready Micro:bit Make-A-Thon at Beaverton High School.
The Make-A-Thon is part of a project to introduce coding and physical computing to every elementary and middle school in the district. Using programmable micro-controllers, kids can create anything from a robotic cat that opens its mouth to beg for “food” to a dog that wags it tail when patted on the head. The Make-A-Thon lets kids tackle a project in a single day that might normally stretch over 2 weeks of class.
Dawn Guildner and Katie White of Beaverton’s Future Ready team are helping teachers design curriculum that encourages kids to become creators and not just consumers of technology. Kids are enthusiastic about getting to choose from a variety of real-world problems and to create solutions that combine coding with the construction of a physical device that runs on the code they write.
The next Make-A-Thon will be Friday April 5, 2019 and will be hosted on Nike’s campus where students will design and build solutions to sports themed problems.
