The Bobcat Blaze
--June 4, 2021--
Principal's Message
I cannot believe this is the second to last edition of The Bobcat Blaze this school year! It has been a great week in Bobcat Country! Vehicle Day and Literacy Day were held with great success. We are so thankful for our community partners who assisted in making both days special and unique.
Next week our 5th grade students will have some special activities to honor their transition into middle school. Thank you to our amazing PTO for helping us ensure our oldest Bobcats feel appreciated and celebrated despite the change to our normal routines. 5th grade parents, please see a special email and Bloomz app message from Mr. Gibson regarding next week's activities.
Please be sure to read this week's edition thoroughly as it includes some information for wrapping up the school year.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend and cannot wait to welcome students back on Monday!

AC Moore Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
How Well Did You Know...?
Were you able to identify these famous Asian and Pacific Islanders? How well did you know these actors, scientists, journalists, and athletes?
Dr. Sandra Lee
Sandra Siew Pin Lee, also known as Dr. Pimple Popper, is an American dermatologist and YouTuber based in Upland, California. She is known for her online videos and her TV series Dr. Pimple Popper
After her graduation from UCLA, Lee attended medical school at the Drexel University College of Medicine and graduated in 1998. She completed her internship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburg then completed her dermatology residency at Southern Illinois University. She went to San Diego to further her experience with laser, dermatological and cosmetic surgery.
In 2010, Lee began uploading videos to YouTube but did not begin to heavily post content until 2015, after she noticed the popularity of her Instagram videos of skin extractions. In 2018, Lee signed with TLC to have her own Dr. Pimple Popper TV series, which premiered on July 11. The fourth season premiered on December 26, 2019.
Leati Joseph Anoa'i (Roman Reigns)
Anoa'i is an American professional wrestler, actor, and former professional football player. He is currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand under the ring name Roman Reigns, and is the current WWE Universal Champion in his second reign.
Reigns held the WWE Championship three times and the WWE Universal Championship twice. He is also a WWE United States Champion, a WWE Intercontinental Champion, a WWE Tag Team Champion, the 2015 Royal Rumble winner, and the 2014 Superstar of the Year. He tied the WWE record for most eliminations in a Survivor Series match with four in the 2013 event and also previously held the record for most eliminations in a Royal Rumble match with 12 in the 2014 event.
Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut, engineer, and the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. She traveled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth, logging more than 372 hours in space.
In 2001, Chawla was selected for her second flight as part of the crew of STS-107. On January 16, 2003, Chawla finally returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on the ill-fated STS-107 mission. The crew performed nearly 80 experiments studying Earth and space science, advanced technology development, and astronaut health and safety.
During the launch of STS-107, Columbia's 28th mission, a piece of foam insulation broke off from the Space Shuttle external tank and struck the left-wing of the orbiter. When Columbia re-entered the atmosphere of Earth, the damage allowed hot atmospheric gases to penetrate and destroy the internal wing structure, which caused the spacecraft to become unstable and break apart. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and several streets, universities, and institutions have been named in her honor. She is regarded as a national hero in India.
Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa
Jason Momoa is an American actor and producer. He made his acting debut as Jason Ioane on the syndicated action drama series Baywatch: Hawaii, which was followed by him portraying Ronon Dex on the Syfy science fiction series Stargate Atlantis, Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, Declan Harp on the Discovery Channel historical drama series Frontier, and Baba Voss on the Apple TV+ science fiction series See. Momoa was featured as the lead of the two lattermost series.
Outside of television, Momoa has portrayed Arthur Curry / Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) since 2016. He will also play Duncan Idaho in the 2021 film adaptation of the science fiction novel Dune.
Lisa Ling
Lisa Ling is an American journalist, television personality, and author. She is currently the host of This Is Life with Lisa Ling on CNN. Previously, she was a reporter on Channel One News, a co-host on the ABC daytime talk show The View (1999–2002), the host of National Geographic Explorer (2003–2010), and a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show. Ling later hosted Our America with Lisa Ling on OWN from 2011 to 2014.
Tuanigamanuolepola "Tua" Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa is an American football quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Alabama, whom he led to consecutive National Championship Games in 2017 and 2018, winning the former and being named MVP. Although he suffered a season-ending hip injury in 2019, he was selected by the Dolphins fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. During his rookie year, Tagovailoa shared playing time with teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick.

News From the Nurse
Hello Bobcat Families!
If your child has medication in the health room, please be sure to pick it up between June 11 and June 15. District policy does not allow me to store medication over the summer break. Please don't hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions about this, or if you need to set up an alternate time to pick up medication. Any medication not picked up by noon on June 22 will be discarded.
Important information will be coming home next week from DHEC about childhood immunizations. Please schedule your child's annual well-visit now to avoid the back-to-school rush at the end of the summer. While at your appointment, be sure to:
- Get medication orders signed for next year (these are attached below)
- Get an updated immunization certificate if your child receives any vaccines
- Get all prescriptions refilled; ask your child's provider to give you a duplicate prescription for medications that will be kept in the health room next year
- Keep all of these things safe until we return in August . . . Contact me to set up a time to bring them in so we are ready to go when your student returns
Finally, I hope you have a healthy, safe, and restful summer! I will return to the health room on August 4th; please don't hesitate to contact me by email if I can help you in any way in the meantime.

Restart Strong
The newsletter provided below will gives an overview/update on the district’s transition to Phase 3 of the Restart Strong Reopening of Schools Plan. Click the link to get the most up-to-date information about the Phase 3 plan.
Parents, students and staff can now get up-to-date information about COVID-19 cases in the district through Richland One’s new online tracking dashboard.
A link to the dashboard, which will be updated daily, is posted on the Restart Strong page on the district’s website www.richlandone.org/restartstrong. In addition to listing the number of positive and quarantined COVID-19 cases among Richland One students and staff, the dashboard includes the number of cases at each district school and administrative building. It also shows daily, weekly and year-to-date summaries of the number of positive COVID-19 cases.
“Richland One’s goal in creating the COVID-19 dashboard is to provide the most accurate and current information possible to our community,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. “Having the same data allows us all to work together to better protect our students and staff.”
COVID-19 data is compiled daily by the district’s Nursing Services office and Accountability, Assessment, Research and Evaluation department. The information shown on Richland One’s dashboard may differ from the reports from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), which are updated on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Media inquiries should be directed to the Richland One Office of Communications.
