A Message from the Principal

Good evening, MTMS,

I hope this message finds you well mid-way through your student's four day weekend. It was lovely for our staff to have time today to do some of our own learning and planning so that we can continue to best serve your students here at MTMS. We are currently having a lot of conversations regarding our grading practices and exploring what shifts we can make as a staff to ensure that our grades are as accurate, bias-resistant, and motivational for our students. It's a tall order, and the conversations have been productive. We are so grateful for the time to be able to explore this work.

There are several important action items in the newsletter below that I want to draw your attention to:

  1. Student Asymptomatic COVID-19 screening is finally set to begin. Students who have been opted into the program will receive three kits and instructions from their Period 6 teachers on Monday of next week. Please make sure your student completes their sample on Tuesday morning before they eat or brush their teeth. Students will drop off their completed samples in the cooler outside the main entrance once they enter the building.
  2. Parent-Teacher Conference Sign Ups are open. Please be thoughtful about who you need to see and register for your time slots before 4:00 pm on Thursday, November 18. Conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 22-23.

I hope you all have a remarkable weekend and are ready for one last week before a well-deserved fall break.

All the best,

Ms. Tonya Arnold

Principal, Mt. Tabor Middle School

Each student will receive three sets of labels and three testing kits during the 6th period class on Monday and are to return the completed kits to the cooler outside the main office on Tuesday, November 16 at the beginning of the school day.

Our schedule here at Mt. Tabor will be for student to return tests every TUESDAY to the cooler outside the main office when they arrive on campus.

If you completed the form for your student and you do not receive testing kits and labels on Monday, it may be that OHSU has not yet processed your application. Please feel free to check in with Tania Trujillo in the main office.

SE Guiding Coalition Updates

As many of you noticed, last week the district postponed listening session with the public and instead convened as a coalition to talk through changing guiderails/non-negotiables with the full SEGC. The district and SEGC is working to create a third proposal for consideration prior to engaging families in an Open House or listening sessions for feedback.

The SEGC will be meeting this week on Thursday evening from 6-9 pm if you would like to view on their YouTube Livestream at

You will find below the flyer for the feedback sessions and Open House as well.

My Child Is Out Sick

If your child is feeling under the weather and is missing school, please be sure to call the MTMS Attendance Line. If you leave us a message, please give us a list of your student's symptoms as we are tracking these as part of our health and safety protocol. A member of the office or admin team may call you back regarding the symptoms you report.

It is also essential that you notify the school if your student has a positive COVID test or is a close contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. Please call the school office, and they will connect you with our School Health Assistant, Julia Mudgett; our school nurse, Catrina Luna; or Principal Tonya Arnold to follow up with you on these protocols. If you need to reach someone after hours, please email
