January is Cervical Health Awareness Month
HPV (human papillomavirus) is a very common infection that spreads through sexual activity. About 14 million Americans, including teens, become infected with HPV each year. Many people with HPV don’t know they are infected because they never develop symptoms or health problems. Most HPV infections (9 out of 10) go away by themselves within two years. But, sometimes, HPV infections will last longer and can cause certain cancers and other diseases. HPV is also a major cause of cervical cancer. Each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer. For further information you may visit www.cdc.gov
HPV infection can cause infections such as:
Cancers of the cervix, vagina, and vulva in women
Cancers of the penis in men
Cancers of the anus and back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils (oropharynx) in both women and men.
How to decrease the risks of HPV disease:
Women should get regular cervical cancer screening test (Pap tests) starting at age 21
Discuss with your doctor the need for the HPV vaccine
The CDC reccommends:
Pre-teens at 11 or 12 should get the vaccine series
Two shots twelve months apart
If shots are given less than 5 months apart a third dose will be necessary
If adolescent is older than 14, three shots will be needed over a 6 month period of time
Women up to the age of 26
Men up to the age of 21 or age 26 depending on the sexual preference
Counselor's Corner
Students from various clubs worked together to create a holiday wellness sale. They created and sold various affordable wellness items that could be given as gifts during the holiday season. Proceeds from this activity went towards sponsoring a school wide student appreciation day in the spring.

Class Highlights
MRHS alumni, Leila Ali, visited some of Mrs. Lisciandro's Italian classes to speak about her experiences with the Peace Corps. Leila spoke about her current situation of living in Kosovo, teaching English to children grades 3-6, and aiding local families in the village where she resides. Leila has dedicated almost two years of her post-college career to helping families and children in 3rd World Countries. She left the students with words of wisdom and reminded them to "do good and be kind always, you don't know what or who you can change with a few nice words." Leila was allowed a short one-week trip back to the US to visit her family and friends, but she will return to Kosovo and her work there for another 20 months. She looks forward to going back and continuing her work as a teacher and dedicated community member. Here at MRHS, a number of students left Mrs. Lisciandro's classroom enlightened and encouraged by Leila's gracious visit.
