SLMS Titan News
Week of August 21, 2023
Welcome SLMS Parents and Guardians,
Safety is key. We are committed to ensuring our students are safe. Please read the two safety concerns below and discuss as a family and community. It truly does take a full community to make sure our kids and staff members are safe.
Safety Concern: Strange Cars
- This week, I emailed regarding a white car that asked one of our students if they could offer the student a ride. PLEASE speak with your student about car safety and that strangers do not always 'look strange.' Too often kids go with someone because they look friendly. PLEASE discuss and keep discussing how our students can remain safe.
Safety Concern: Car Rider Dismissal
Car Rider dismissal is a smooth process when everyone follows the traffic guidance.
Reminders:
- NO LEFT turns out of the circle drive or parking lots
- Students MUST be picked up in the circle drive and NOT the street (DO NOT have your student run across the street to your car)
- NO CELL PHONES in a school zone
- The Park adjacent to our school is not FBISD property. Students who go to the park after school do so unsupervised and subject to Sugar Land city regulations
- Only Special Education parents should pick up in the parking lot near the park/tennis courts
I appreciate your diligence in working with SLMS.
NEW information included this week:
- Reminder: August Open House
- September Calendar of Events
Have a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. Latoya Garrett
Principal

It is imperative that you speak with students regarding the seriousness of vaping in general, being in possession, and/or using a vape on campus.
Cell Phones Policy
Students may bring a cell phone for communication before/after school. During the school day, cell phone access is restricted and cell phones must be off and placed in backpacks. Cell phones not adhering to the school policy will be confiscated and students can pick them up at the end of the school day (for the first and second confiscation).
On the third confiscation, a parent will be required to pick up the cell phone and pay a $15 fee to SLMS. The district cell phone policy can be found in The Student Code of Conduct. Click here to access the FBISD Student Code of Conduct
If a student needs to make a phone call, we have office phones that can be accessed with permission.

The 2023-2024 School Year is off to a great start! We have loved seeing your children over the last few weeks, and look forward to seeing you all at Open House on August 31. Please see some information below from our team.
Schedule Changes/Adjustments are only allowable for the following reasons:
- An error made when the original schedule was made (a boy in a girls PE class or an 8th grade student in a 7th grade Health class)
- A student is in a course he/she has already taken (in Art I, but needs Art II)
- A student has been paired with an instrument (Band/Orchestra) and needs to move class periods.
General elective changes are made during the course verification window during course selection.
We appreciate your understanding as we uphold this FBISD policy.
Level up or Down from AAC classes:
Level changes can begin after PR1 ends. Once Progress Reports post on Aug. 29, you may begin requesting level changes. The 1st step is to contact your child’s teacher. There is a form for you to fill out. We ask that you make communication with the teacher, as well as have your child attend tutorials before requesting a level down from AAC. All schedule changes must be complete by October 27.
Gifted and Talented Referral Process is Open!
If you would like to refer your student, please click on the link below:
SCHOOLINKS is coming!
SchooLinks is our new College and Career Readiness Platform. Your students will begin to engage and explore in College and Career Readiness activities in 6th grade. We are so excited to be able to bring this to you and your family.
Your child will be introduced to SchooLinks by their grade-level counselor during the window of September 18-29. They will learn how to log in, engage in an onboarding activity, and have time to explore the platform. This program is located in 1Link and is accessible at home as well! We encourage all students and families to become familiar with it. We will be referencing it and utilizing it throughout your child’s middle and high school years! We will have more information about the parent-side of SchooLinks at Open House, including how to link to your child’s account.
Student Dress Code
All students must adhere to the student dress code. Highlights include:
- Clothes may not show the midriff, undergarments, chest, or posterior
- Unsafe footwear is not permitted (house shoes, slippers)
- No depiction of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, and more
Please see the attached information regarding dress code.
