Holiday Sharing - Sock Drive!
The holidays are a time to come together with family and friends. You exchange presents while sipping mugs of hot cocoa. You reminisce about past memories, and make new ones.
However, as the festivities come closer, the temperature drops. Not everyone has the means to stay warm. That’s why NHS has kicked off Holiday Sharing. Middle schoolers can bring in gloves, and high schoolers can bring in socks. Anyone can donate hats or scarves. There will be a box for each in the main office. The donated items, however, must be new. An important date to remember: Friday, December 14th. This is the last day all items will be accepted.
This is also a competition between middle schoolers and high schoolers! Whichever group brings in the most pairs of gloves or socks will receive bragging rights.
We hope you’ll help us collect as much, if not more, than we did last year! Happy holidays!

Budget Listening Session - December 11th 6pm
You are welcome to join us on December 11th from 6-7 pm (just before the PTO meeting) in ACMA's library for a "Budget Listening Session." As our district receives the state budget projections and looks ahead at our BSD budget, they are asking each school to gather community input on issues in the Beaverton School District and engage in a budget activity. Every school in BSD will host a similar event, so if you are not able to make ACMA's evening, or if you have students at other BSD schools, you can attend a listening session and do the budget activity at a neighborhood school as well. This is an opportunity to learn a little more about the budget and offer your perspective as well.

The Moving Pictures of Blank Canvas Types
“The kids were dedicated to walking their own paths, determined to celebrate the things they found for themselves and not the things the mainstream culture offered them. They were the kids with the leather jackets, the ‘weird’ haircuts and the love for music you didn’t hear on the radio. They marched to their own drum beat.” Film teacher Kevin Bennett smiled remembering his students from the mid 1990s. “All of them took on learning as something they did for themselves, discovering new philosophers, writers, books, bands and artists. They were downtown Portland kids, at Powell’s Books and The Satyricon Nightclub and performing in their own bands or poetry readings. They were close to one another and supportive.” Read more...

School Board Approves 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 School Calendars
At the October 22, 2018 Business Meeting, the School Board approved the Superintendent’s calendar recommendation for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Staff and community members overwhelmingly preferred Option 1 for both school years.
In the 2019-2020 school year, the first day for students will be Monday, August 26 and the last day for students will be Friday, June 12. In the 2020-2021 school year, the first day for students will be Monday, August 31 and the last day for students will be Friday, June 18. Option 1 provides 10 days for winter break in both school years.
Both calendars are below for your planning purposes. Please understand that budgetary and contractual obligations may impact the implementation of the final calendars.
ACMA Oregon State Report Card
School and district report cards for the 2017-18 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). I welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
Application Due Date - December 7th
The application timeline has changed for the 2019-2020 school year. The lottery application phase has been shortened to make Second Consideration applications available earlier. This will allow students more time to work on their applications and schools more time to review them.
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or apply for one of a number of learning options. Transportation is provided.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Beginning October 15, current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school, or who do not have Internet access, will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 15, 2018. Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

Did you know...Beaverton School District parents can create their own Canvas Parent Observer Accounts.
The Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is used by many middle and high school teachers as an extension to in-class instruction. Teachers using Canvas can post assignments, give feedback, and communicate with students.
Parents or guardians do not need a Canvas account to monitor student progress, you can continue to use ParentVUE; however, you can create a Canvas account to view more detailed assignment information, view feedback and communicate with the teacher.
Think of Canvas as a virtual backpack, giving you a look at the day-to-day assignments. ParentVUE will still be the source for attendance and permanent record grades.
Visit the BSD Canvas for Parents webpage to learn more about how to create your own Canvas account, as well as answers to frequently asked questions.
BSD Communication About Lockouts
We received inquiries from parents about practices for communicating about lockouts following two instances of lockouts during the first week of school.
We encourage parents to watch our video outlining the difference between a “lockout” and a “lockdown.” A lockdown is called when there is a possible threat inside the school, while a lockout is called when there is a possible threat near the school or in the neighborhood.
The Beaverton School District does not typically send out parent notifications for lockouts for the following reasons:
- They are most often unrelated to what is happening inside the school.
- They are often due to police activity in the neighborhood.
- They are usually resolved quickly, often within minutes.
We always post a banner on our website when a lockout is in effect and is cleared. You can subscribe to our RSS feed so that you are always notified when a banner is placed on our website.
We do not typically send out notifications about lockouts via SchoolMessenger because the lockout will likely be resolved before the system is even finished sending out the notification. We do make exceptions to this practice if a lockout goes on for an extended period of time, or if it affects dismissal.
If a lockout happens during arrival, we work closely with our Transportation Department to hold or reroute buses as necessary, as well as with law enforcement agencies who provide support to ensure that students can be ushered into the school building safely.
High School Boundary Transition Reminder
Just a reminder, if you are in 8th grade (students who were in the 6th grade during the 2016-2017 school year) and are considering going back to your neighborhood school, you will not be eligible to be grandfathered into a high school and must attend their neighborhood/boundary high school assigned to their home address.
Additionally, District transportation is not available for sibling/grandfathered students starting in the 2019-2020 school year.
For more information, please visit the Sibling/Grandfather Plan webpage created during the High School Boundary process.
Counseling & Main Office Hours

Stay Healthy this Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Attendance Matters!
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing two days a month. That's about 18 days, or……10% of the school year. #EveryDayMatters
Good attendance habits are developed in the first month of the school year, and we want to reinforce that message with our campaign in these first weeks. We have developed a logo, newsletter article, social media graphics and posts. We have created a page on the Communications & Community Involvement staff intranet page. You can find all of these assets there, available to download. When ODE launches its campaign, we will upload those assets as well.
Attendance Facts:
- 1 in 6 students in Oregon is considered chronically absent.
- Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of school days (about 2 days a month).
- By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of school.
- The academic impact of an absence is the same, whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
- Students who live in communities with high levels of poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others.
