Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of January 18, 2021
I hope your children had a good week back at school and are settling into their routines. Please be reminded that Monday, January 18 is the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and school will be closed in observance and celebration of Dr. King's contributions.
Our weekly packet distribution will be on Tuesday from 8-10 and 3-5.
Also, please remember that our School Picture Days will take place on Monday, January 25 for TK-2nd grade students and Monday, February 1st for grades 3-6. We ask that families arrive at the following times to evenly distribute student arrivals and to avoid lines. If the time frame doesn't work for you, it is okay to choose another time, but we do hope everyone will try to stick to the times given below, if possible. Please see the following timeframes:
Monday January, 25:
TK and Kindergarten 12:00-1:30
1st grade 1:30-3:00
2nd grade 3:00-4:30
Monday, February 1:
3rd grade 12:30-2:00
4th grade 2:00-3:00
5th grade 3:00-4:00
6th grade 4:00-5:00
Siblings may attend either date, if that helps families. Photos will be taken outdoors with COVID-19 protocols in place. Please park, wear your masks and wait at the marked areas to be called down for your child's photo. The photos will be taken outside of the main office. All visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before approaching the photo area. Do not come to the school if you or your child are showing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID within the past two weeks.
Reminder: Street access to the school from Soquel Dr. is still impacted due to a public works project. Cars traveling north on Soquel will not be able to turn left into the driveway and must continue to Cabrillo College Drive and make a U-turn. Access from Soquel Dr. for southbound traffic is not impacted, however the center turn lane and left lanes are closed.
Please also remember that on Tuesday 1/19 the School Site Council (5:30-6:30) and the MVP (7:00-8:30) meetings will be held. Both of these meetings are open to all! See calendar of events below for meeting links.
Have a wonderful three-day weekend!
Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Students will be continuing unit 4 in our language arts curriculum, Benchmark, this week. This unit generally focuses on narrative stories and how perspectives/points of view shape these stories.
If your family did not get the free winter reading books, we will have them available at distribution on Tuesday, the 19th, from 8-10 or 3-5.
The science fair looks quite a bit different this year, and due to the structure of distance learning, it is not being required for 4th-6th graders. It is still encouraged for those students wishing to participate, and they can still submit their projects directly to the county fair this year. You can find more information about that here: https://ca-scc.zfairs.com/?f=760d2abd-97bf-4923-871c-a48fb3af0565
Please note, the deadline for registration is March 1st.
We will have science fair boards for anyone that wishes to participate, please just reach out to me and we can set something up.

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa
