Allergy Safety
In our continued efforts to keep all our children safe, Ms. Little, our PE teacher, will be showing the Kyle Dine and Friends DVD to her classes during the month of September. Students will be learning about food allergies through the use of songs, puppets, and games.
It's important to keep children informed about food allergies so they and their friends can remain safe during school. We're off to a great and safe year!
At-Home FAMILY Math Problem of the Month
Autumn
Problem 1:
Mrs. Smith's second grade class is studying geese. The geese have started to leave on their winter migration. During a class field trip, the class saw two flocks of geese flying by. The first flock had 81 geese in it. The second flock had 17 geese in it.

The Second Step Program: Addressing the Illinois Social Emotional Learning Standards
For Families
To kick off our Second Step Program, our school-wide theme was our school as a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we reminded students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition we reminded students of our school rules. (See the Three B's listed with the Student of the Month article.)
We’ll also begin teaching the Second Step program, which includes lessons that support these behaviors.
Support your child at home in welcoming others and acting and speaking in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about specific ways you can help your child with these behaviors at home.
During October, our school-wide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners.
Second Step lessons teach skills for learning. You’ll be receiving Home Links describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child to practice them. We hope you enjoy them!
On a related note, we are also incorporating "mindfulness" into our Monday Morning Meetings with students. The dictionary defines mindfulness as "a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique". Ms. Yacobi is leading these discussions, which emphasizes ways students can relax, reflect, and prepare for their day at school.
Dress Code Reminders
With the warmer weather here are some dress code reminders (taken from Student/Parent Handbook)-

Physical Education News
News from the gym! Physical Education is a very important class. It may be a break from your classroom, but it is not just a break. We learn a lot of different things here at Reed School. We do go over different sports, but we also cover muscles, bones, health foods, your well being, juggling, cup stacking, and many other things. There are a few written tests over the school year and study guides will go home before every test. Your child's behavior and participation are a part of their grade. If they are not behaving in a positive way, they will have to fill out a think sheet. This will start to affect the student's grade. Participation is important, because you need to move in physical education. We have websites with your child's PE schedule on there. They NEED gym shoes with shoe laces or velcro. This is a safety concern. If you have any questions or concerns please email us. This is the quickest way to get ahold of us. We are going to have a great year! GO ROCKETS!
News From the Music Room
Welcome Bach! We will be learning about Johann Sebastian Bach, and listening to lots of his music this month. Second Graders have been introduced to a wonderful folk dance called Sasha! Third Graders have enjoyed reviewing it to start off our year. This month in the music room, we will be singing, playing instruments, and creatively moving.
News From the Art Room
Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer breaks! I look forward to seeing my former Walsh students now in 2nd grade, and my 3rd grade friends. The 2nd grade students will be learning about Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. We'll be creating "Picasso Monsters" - Cubist style portrait collages with a Halloween twist. The 3rd grade students will be learning about American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. They'll be drawing and then painting large sunflowers in the style of O'Keeffe.
