Principal's Message
Thank you to all the families who have participated in our Fall Family Conferences. We appreciate the partnership as we grow together.
Today, we celebrated Veterans Day. We started the day by having an all school read aloud story about Veterans Day, its beginnings and meanings, and how it is celebrated. All classes also watched a great video of current students, former students, and members of the military. This video was created by Mrs. Meyers and showcases our students' talents and even shares how members of the military use HOWL in their careers. You can watch it below.
We also have proudly displayed all the stars that students decorated and brought in to school. The pictures of those are below as well. Many of our classes also incorporated activities and/or crafts to help recognize the day.

Vision and Hearing Screening
We recognize that vision and hearing are important components in educational performance. Children experiencing hearing or vision loss often are not aware they do not hear or see as they should. For this reason, it is up to the adults responsible for the child’s health care and educational process to identify those children with hearing or vision problems and to make sure they receive the appropriate follow-up care. Therefore, we partner with the Illinois Department of Public Health by implementing the Illinois Child Vision and Hearing Test Act (410 ILCS 205), (which mandates vision and hearing screening programs for preschool and school age children). Screenings are mandated at specific age and grade levels and must be done by technicians/nurses trained and certified to conduct these screenings.
Vision
Annually for preschool children 3 years of age or older in any public or private educational program or licensed child care facility, and for school age children in kindergarten, second and eighth grades; are in special education class; have been referred by a teacher; or are transfer students.
Hearing
Annually for preschool children 3 years of age or older in any public or private educational program or licensed child care facility, and for all school age children grades kindergarten, first, second and third; are in special education class; have been referred by a teacher; or are transfer students.
Our school will conduct schoolwide vision and hearing screenings and rescreenings on Wednesday, November 16th. Your child will only receive communication from the screening team if the hearing or vision screening results have concerns, require follow up, or could not be conducted.
We appreciate your support and partnership. If you have any questions about the screening, please contact our building nurse Sheila Nettleton at 630-636-3202 or email sheila-nettleton@sd308.org. You may also find more information on the Illinois Department of Health Website.
Family - School Connection (Growth Mindset)
- Mentioned last week, but possibly most important, so we mention it again: Neurons form stronger connections when people push through their comfort zones to overcome a struggle or obstacle. Don't be so quick to answer your child's questions. Let them think it out. Ask, "What do you think about that?" Or, "How do you think we could answer that question?" Or, "Can you think of ways to problem solve that?" We call this "Productive Struggle" and is a GAME CHANGER for learning. Let it happen.
- Encourage your child to expand on their answers. Elaboration reveals what children do and do not understand. Students process at a much deeper level when they reflect on responses.
- Explain the purpose of abstract skills. This is the "Why do I need to know this?" that we hear sometimes. Bridge the gap between school learning and real life skills by showing examples of how the knowledge will help them in the future.
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
Emotion Management teaches us "how to build emotion vocabularies, practice identifying their own and others’ emotions, and recognize the importance of labeling and managing emotions."
Next week, your child should learn how to:
- Kindergarten: be able to demonstrate using context and behavior clues to label feelings, and to demonstrate slow breathing.
- 1st Grade: be able to demonstrate using context and behavior clues to label feelings, and demonstrate at least one way to feel calm.
- 2nd Grade: be able to explain why different people can have different feelings in the same situation.
- 3rd Grade: be able to demonstrate that they recognize differences between levels of intensity of similar emotions.
- 4th Grade: be able to demonstrate their ability to rethink a variety of situations.
- 5th Grade: be able to identify two things they can change in a recurring situation to manage strong emotions.

Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
