Lil' Pirates Learning From Home

Happy Monday!
Parents, we know how important it is for our preschool kids to get out and have fun! These activities are not meant to take an entire school day for the children. That would be CRAZY, right? When the weather is beautiful, take advantage of going out on a scavenger hunt- but try to incorporate our words and concepts. When you see a shadow or a reflection, point it out and have them search for shadows, reflections, patterns, shapes, things that are smooth, things that are rough, things that are bumpy, sharp things, dull things, long things, short things, living things, nonliving things, red things, blue things, count things, etc.... we could go on and on because learning opportunities are endless.
Every thing you do with your child is prime time for learning! That is the most beautiful part about this age. They WANT to know EVERYTHING.
Some suggestions to make things easier for you now and when we resume a regular schedule once again:
- keep a regular schedule (and if your bedtime and wake up times have changed since being in school, allow time before returning to school to adjust back to routine)
- include playtime inside and outside in your daily schedule
- include one artistic or creative activity every day (this does not have to be very involved- drawing a picture and telling a story about it, painting a rock, using play-dough to make a robot, etc, drawing with sidewalk chalk outside)
- talk about the weather every day (the best time would be when it is time to get dressed for the day- ask what they think would be best to wear according to the weather)
- when conflict arises, use the following strategy:
- identify the problem
- come up with possible solutions
- ask if the solutions are safe and fair for everyone
- choose the best solution
- read every day

Just a Thought
When a child is trying to tell us something, they do not always have the executive functioning or social skills to know that it might not be the best time for us to hear what they have to say. As the adults, we have to model and teach them by our own actions. When we tell them to be quiet, we are telling them that what they have to say is not as important as what we are doing at that moment. Try this:, "I really want to hear what you have to say. Please wait one minute while I finish this, so that I can give YOU my attention." In that manner, you are teaching them that you value what they want to tell you, and you are teaching them that sometimes we have to wait. At this stage, our children crave our attention the most. Before long, they will begin to crave the attention of peers the most. We must seize the opportunities we have while they are present in order to make the kind of impact that will make our children stronger, smarter, more confident, and successful lifelong learners.
