Apple Bread Making
Cinnamon Apple Bread
This week you are getting a delightful treat made with fresh, local apples. Our crew made you your very own mini loaf of apple bread. This seasonal bread is perfect on its own or with some creamy butter, for breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack. We hope you enjoy it!
Salsa Verde
Last week, you were able to enjoy experimenting with some fresh-picked tomatillos. Now you get your own jar of homemade salsa verde, made from more of our tomatillos. Salsa verde is a great accompaniment for Mexican dishes and so much more! (Last night, I mixed rice, shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, and our fresh salsa verde together for a great one dish meal. Yum!) Check out other tasty ideas in the links below.
The recipe we followed to make this flavorful green sauce was:
1/2 pound tomatillos (5 or 6), husked, rinsed, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup coarsely chopped cilantro
2 fresh jalapeno or serrano chiles, coarsely chopped (including seeds), or more to taste
1 large garlic clove, peeled
2 tablespoons chopped white onion
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
Put tomatillos in a blender first, then add all the remaining ingredients. Pulse a few times, then blend until the salsa is very smooth, about 1 minute. If desired, season to taste with additional chile and salt and blend again.
Parsley
Parsley is an herb used around the world to add lively color, fresh taste, and delightful aroma to many different dishes. Often thought of as merely a garnish, it is so much more! Check out the recipes here and in the links below. Would you have ever dreamed there were so many uses for parsley?!?
Baked Green Rice
Mix together:
1 cup milk
1/2 cup finely chopped parsley
1 finely chopped garlic clove
1 small minced onion
2 cups cooked rice
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheese
1/8 tsp curry powder
Place into a baking dish, into which has been poured 2 Tbs olive oil. ( the recipe calls for a 7 inch ring mold. I use a round 2 qt casserole dish )
Bake at 325' for about 30 minutes.
Homemade Soup Stock
Parsley makes a great addition to homemade soup stock -- just combine it with some potatoes, sweet potatoes, celery, onion, garlic, salt, allspice berries, black pepper, and water, and simmer for 1-2 hours or more. More time will mean deeper flavor, so just taste as the time passes, add salt as needed, and remove from heat when you like what you have. Strain out the cooked veggies and herbs. Now you have a wonderful, homemade broth.
Pears
One of our GG clients (who lives on a farm and raises chickens!) wanted to share some of his pear harvest with you. There are two orchard-fresh pears in your share today, good for slicing and eating, chopping up to toss on a salad...or try one of the ideas below.
Next week is our final CSA of the 2019 season! Hard to believe it went so fast!
We have enjoyed working with all of you this year and we appreciate your support!
