Comments:
Today is one of those days where you can’t really look to closely at times as it was to hot to race fast.
Our estimation is that we are going to run 1-2 minutes faster in normal conditions. Between last year
and this year, there were many large schools added to this meet. The boys race this year had 229
runners in it compared to 132 runners a year ago, so the meet is growing and becoming much more
competitive. Senior Jerratt Bradley led the way for the boys today and was our only runner to medal by placing in the top 30. His time is nearly identical to what he ran at this course a year ago in much easier conditions to race in. Top freshman boy today was Jonas Staples who turned in a good time and was the 8th freshman boy to finish the race. We feel good about finishing ahead of a couple league schools but have some work to do to close the gap to Spring Hill. Overall a good first outing and something to learn from and build on next time out.

Comments:
Everything said about heat and number of athletes in race about boy’s race can be echoed for the girl’s race. There were 192 finishers and about 215 started the race. We had a few girls that we had to take off the race course due to heat related issues. As far as the team performance goes, we feel like we competed well overall. Finishing 3rd to two teams that finished among the best in classes 5A and 6A last year is a good start to the season for us. We finished well ahead of the other three league schools in the meet, so we can turn our attention to other league schools at our next meet.

The Eudora Cardinals took on the Piper Pirates on Friday night and came away with a loss. Piper is a great team who returns a majority of their offensive and defensive starters from last year. The boys fought hard all night and there are some bright spots to build on going forward in the season. The goal of this team is to get better every game and our legacy will be remembered by how we respond after a loss.
The defense played well for most of the night and held Piper to 188 yards offensively, compared to last year when the Pirates had 415 yards of offense. However, Piper was able to score on a kickoff return, had one interception for a touchdown, and another interception give them the ball on the Cardinal 15 yard line. If we take away these three big plays, the Pirates only scored 13 points on the Cardinal defense. The defense needs to work on creating turnovers and were close to a couple interceptions and forced fumbles. This team did fly around and make some great plays, but will ultimately know that any points scored are too many. Defensively the Cardinals were led in tackles by junor Cael Lynch, who was the player of the game with 8 tackles and 1 pass break up. Senior Brett Breedlove, sophomore Silas Etter, junior Darrell Higgins, junior Zak Van Diest, and freshman Jayden Hamm all saw their first varsity minutes and the experience they earned should help them for the next game.
Offensively the Cardinals had 242 total yards, outgaining the Pirates. Turnovers were the difference in the game as the Pirates had zero and the Cardinals had 4 interceptions. Eudora was able to move the ball effectively and had some bright spots as well. Junior Zeke Reazin earned some great experience running the veer and was able to rush for 67 yards. Zeke is the Cardinal’s offensive player of the game. He now has confidence moving forward, and will take care of the football to ensure that we do not turn the ball over. Junior Cael Lynch carried the ball for 74 yard for an average of almost 4 yards a carry. Sophomore Brayden Beerbower added 18 yards on the ground while senior Jake Boucher had 11. Silas Etter had 2 receptions for 39 yards, with one being an excellent catch to get the Cardinals out of trouble in Piper territory. Sloan Hayden added 2 catches for 15 yards and Jake Boucher had 1 catch for 12 yards. The passing game is much improved as the Cardinals only averaged 29 yards passing a game last year. It will continue to improve as a team that doesn’t traditionally pass the ball learns to gain confidence in this area of the game. There were zero fumbles by the ball carriers and only 15 total penalty yards, which is something that is new from last year, where we averaged 2 fumbles and almost 50 penalty yards a game.
The Cardinal football team will continue to improve and get better every game. The score sometimes does not show how much better a team has gotten, but this is a good football team who will be tough to beat come playoff time.

Last Tuesday EHS soccer traveled to Atchison to play Maur Hill. The conditions were not ideal for either team as the weather was hot and humid, and playing on very thick grass with grass clippings all over the field made us realize how good we have it here!
Varsity was able to come away with a 6-3 road win. We felt we did not play our best, especially in our defending third. Our attack was pretty good but we also played a way we normally don't want to play, which was long ball. How they were playing dictated how we played. They played a high line, so we took advantage of our speed and went over the top a lot. By doing this we took 35 shots of which 16 were on frame, and we were fortunate enough to put 6 away. Junior Alex Kooken scored a hat trick by way of a great goal on a through ball from junior Dylan Meier, a PK, and a rebound goal. Junior Colby Lawhorn had a goal from a ball over the top that he ran down and controlled and finished. Senior Caden Willits scored from a spot kick after freshman Parker Hurla earned a foul in the box. Junior Keaton Herron also got on the board by running down another through ball and beat the keeper back post. We honestly could have scored 10+ because the chances we created were really good chances. Defensively we were diving in, not communicating enough, and not covering each other. We allowed them to get way to many shots off. Having said that, the way were were attacking left us vulnerable to a counter-attack which they did a good job of. It was an extremely open game. Junior goalie William Christensen ended the game with 10 saves and junior Devon Moncrief had 6.
Traveling to Piper last Thursday and coming home with a tie, 0-0, was very frustrating. This was actually probably our best-played game in terms of defending, possession and creating chances. We defended really well as a team and we attacked well, we just didn't finish our chances. We finish just half of them we win 4 or 5-0. So in those terms, it was frustrating. Our backline of senior Brant Arnold, and juniors Isaac Lewis, Daniel Grosdidier, Kale Breedlove, Holden Andrews, and Dakota Heston were our players of the game. They made some adjustments in practice on Wednesday and it translated perfectly to the game.
We now have the best record through three games in program history. Next week is a big week as we host Hayden and Spring Hill on Tuesday and Thursday. Saturday we will travel to Olathe Northwest. Our game time for Saturday has been changed to 11:00am start for JV followed by varsity. This change was made due to ACT testing on Saturday.

Last week was a tough week for the JV soccer team. We started off the season playing against Maur Hill on a smaller field which caused us issues as we like to get the ball wide and attack with our wingers. Varsity also played first so we had limited subs and the heat was brutal. The game plan was to just go out and communicate well, have good shape, and play hard. Overall, I thought we did these things well, but we came up short on the scoreboard losing 0-6.
Our second game was against Piper and this game went a lot better than the first game. The boys really learned from the first game and applied it against Piper. I felt that we controlled the first half and should have been up at least 1-0, but we just couldn't find the back of the net. The second half was really hard on the boys. We only had one sub available for the entirety of the game. Even with the one sub, we created opportunities and had some quality chances. The score ended up being 0-5 but the boys played hard. I honestly feel like they gave everything they had and left it all on the field during the Piper game. The team gets its first opportunity to play at home tonight vs Hayden, 4:30p
Varsity Volleyball - Coach Cleveland
The Varsity Volleyball team returns six varsity players for 2019 season. Those six individuals, along with six new varsity players bring a totally new outlook on the 2019 season. As a coach, I could not be happier with the amount of hard work, effort and dedication these ladies put in this summer. With great leadership and experience from our senior class, mixed with a great group of well rounded athletes, this season will be one to remember.
Starting off our 2019 season, the lady cardinals defeated Piper in three straight sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-12) on Tuesday night. The first set of the night went in our favor in every way possible. The girls passed well which led to key offensive systems. Overall in the first set, serving and defense was the key. The Pirates struggled to pass several of our serves and our senior defenders dug up several attacks and in result, the momentum stayed on our side.
The second set started out much of the same way as in the first set. Unfortunately, we went through a bit of a slump and struggled to get out of one rotation. After a quick timeout to refocus, the girls stepped back out on the court. To get the side out, junior Lauren Mitchell stepped up defensively at the net, with a monster block to change the momentum for the Cardinals! Following in transition, senior Keagan Shockley sealed the deal with a big kill down the line. The girls took the second set 25-22.
The third set of the night started out a little slow for both teams. The cardinals and pirates traded several points back and forth. About seven points in, the cardinals turned on the heat and took set 3 by force 25-12. Overall, it was a great night for the cardinals! We host Spring Hill at home on Tuesday! We would love to have a huge crowd there to support the girls! Students, be loud as you cheer on the girls!!!
