Our Brickie Leaders Set The Example

Every February there is a Kindness Week and our Brickie Leaders, though they are always kind, looked at this week as an opportunity to show and educate others on the impact kindness can have and ways to spread it! Throughout each day the students would do something extra kind such as hand out thanks you's to the teachers and staff, showing appreciation for all of their hard work. They wore their uniquely designed shirts to express that "kindness matters" and built a tree that others could write and leave positive notes of encouragement for their peers. They joined together as a high school community and created a banner for fellow student, Hailey, who is currently going through treatment for leukemia. Everyone was able to sign it and send a positive message to her which would make anyone's day better! The Brickie Leaders make it their goal to always spread and promote kindness - our Brickies are better people because of them. Thank You!

"Night To Shine" Event Is A Night To Remember!

The "Night to Shine" event is an memorable event that is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. This evening is dedicated to people with special needs ages 14 and older and gives them a prom night experience! This year, the event was held on February 9th with over 535 churches from around the world hosting the event. There was approximately 90,000 honored guests that attended with the support of 175,000 volunteers! It should not surprise you that our Brickie Leaders got involved with the support of other Brickie's wanting to join them for this night. They were each partnered with a "date", then ate, danced, and helped make the night memorable for all that were there! Special guests were able to get their shoes shined, make-up and hair touched-up, and wore beautiful gowns - many of which were donated just for this event! Our Brickies cannot be thanked enough for volunteering their time for such a great event. Way to go Brickies!

Our Bands Are Award Winning!

Congratulations to the five Hobart High School Band students who participated in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Solo & Ensemble! There were both solo and ensemble performance by our Brickies and they ALL did a great job! Earning gold ratings for solos were: Kylie Martin, clarinet; Kiera Chapuis, Flute; Sophie Jancich, Flute; and Nick Sanchez, Bassoon. Sophomore and first time state qualifier, Abigail Clemmons earned a silver rating for her flute solo. Kiera Chapuis earned additional honors with a “with distinction” award for her flute solo - this means it was nearly perfect! The Flute quartet of Sophie Jancich, Amber Anderson, Abigail Clemmons, and Kiera Chapuis earned a gold rating and the Woodwind Trio of Kiera Chapuis, Kylie Martin and Nick Sanchez also earned a gold rating! Brickie winners all around! But wait, there is more!

Throughout this winter, many of our Hobart Band Musicians have been selected to perform with Regional and College All-Star Bands - including the Indiana Bandmasters Association All-District Honor Band, Ball State Honor Band, and Indiana State University All-Star Band! WOW!

Congratulations to these Hobart All-Star Band participants:

IBA All-District Honor Band: Sophie Jancich

BSU Honor Band: Kylie Martin

ISU All-Star Band: Kiera Chapuis, Abby Clemmons, Kylie Martin, Peyton Hicks, Sophie Jancich

Let's keep going, shall we, and move on to the Middle School Orchestra Musicians who also took part in the Indiana State School Music Associastion's district solo and ensemble competition and walked away with ALL 30 participants earning a Gold Rating! Quiet the accomplishment, Brickies!

Our High School Athletes Are Unstoppable!

This past month it has been clear that our Band and Orchestra students are rocking it! However, they are not the only Brickies making a name for them selves, let turn our attention to our athletes! Our Brickie Cheerleaders started the month off right by bringing home a 1st place victory at their first cheer competition for the season! They scores a 89.6 out of 100 in the large varsity division and showed true sportsmanship and leadership! Great job ladies!

Our Swim team had some impressive moments this season, most notably for freshman, Emma Wright. Emma really showed up at the Sectionals taking a first place victory in the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle races which advanced her to the State competition. Here she was able to compete at the Indiana University Natatorium and swam her heart out! She finished strong and represented herself well! With 3 years left of her high school career, we are sure to hear more about her in the future!

Another great athletic team are our wrestlers! They had 2 Brickies advance to State finals, which were held in the Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Senior, Tyler Triana had a tough loss in the first round which ended his season abruptly. Then senior, Zack Fattore, took to dominating every match that weekend until a controversial call was made that ended his chance for a 1st place State win. The best part of the controversial loss was the way Zack chose to handle it. He accepted the decision with class, dignity, and respect while hugging his opponent and later coming down to the mat to help his defeater warm up for his chance at the State title. It showed every one of us how one's character can outshine any victory, it showed us the true Champion that Zack is! He then finished the evening with a 3rd place victory! Hard work, and character, sure does pay off! Outstanding job, Brickies!

Why, Chess, It Is Awesome!

Last month, 12 Hobart Chess Team members complete at the Scholastic Chess of Indiana Team Regionals competition held at Morton High School. Three teams of four students competed against some of the best chess players in their division in the state! Lets's congratulate ALL three teams for being invited back to compete at the State Level! To add a "check mate" to this event, we congratulate specifically Team A who displayed much grit through the day facing some of the most challenging competition! During the last round, Team A was competing for a 1st place victory! Though they were close, the ended the competition with a 3rd place title out of 21 teams and created history by bringing home Hobart's FIRST EVER chess competition trophy! We are so proud of your hard work and attitude that you expressed and wish you the best of luck at STATE! #BrickieUp

Our Youth and Government Had Another Successful Trip!

Our outstanding Youth and Government students along with their Advisor, Mr. May, had a successful trip to the State Capital last month where many of their bills were passed and many of our students were recognized for their efforts! The elected officials from our crew did an outstanding job of running the conference and all of the students represented the School City of Hobart with dignity and professionalism. A personal shout out goes to Jason Esquivel, who served as the Secretary of State, for creating an electronic voting page through Google for the Indiana Youth and Government officers to use. This was a first in the history of the Indiana program! You have already made history. We are proud of their hard work and can't wait to see the impact they will have on our Country! Great job Brickies!

Surgery On Text Features In 3rd Grade!

Mrs. Floyd's 3rd grade class at Joan Martin Elementary has been studying text features of nonfiction text. To get students more engaged, they performed text feature surgery. Students became surgeons and “cut” apart nonfiction text to find specific text features. Mrs. Floyd put on a “heartbeat” of the patient in the background, while the students wore gloves, aprons, and face-masks. They cut out the text features and put them into a booklet. The kids loved the lesson. She even had students showing her text features days after the lesson! Joan Martin's Principal, Mrs. Allen, even got into it and put on the mask, gloves, and gown! Everyone had a blast!

Academic Brickyard

“A leader's job is not to do the work for others, it's to help others figure out how to do it themselves, to get things done, and to succeed beyond what they thought possible.” - Simon Sinek

Over the past few months, a group of HHS senior students (Samantha Meyer, Rebecca Meyer, Emily Zanolla, and Paige Nestich) met with our Superintendent, Dr. Buffington, and our Director of College and Careers, Mr. Krieg, and together created the Academic Brickyards. The Academic Brickyards are modeled after writing centers and tutoring centers found at most colleges and universities. During their Success Period, these students (along with some other senior student leaders they recruited) voluntarily give up their time in order to serve others. They meet with their peers to help them with Math or English work. In doing so, they are modeling the leadership skills Sinek points out since they are helping their peers figure out how to solve difficult math problems, work through syntactical difficulties, navigate the blurry lines involved in a citation, apply difficult concepts and mathematical formulas, and other related concepts. Together, they are helping one another succeed beyond what was once thought to be possible.

Our student leaders are determined to leave a legacy, and this legacy is all about service and helping our Brickies build their skills, knowledge, and competencies brick-by-brick. As leaders, this group of students is already planning the next phase of what these Academic Brickyards could entail. They are meeting with English and Math teachers, talking with Administrators, and most importantly getting feedback from their peers. In addition, they are even utilizing marketing approaches they learn about in their Business courses to promote the Academic Brickyards. They even worked with Mr. Crouch (Radio/TV Instructor) to create a promotional video that was shown to all of the students at Hobart High School, and they worked with our Director of Technology to create Academic Brickyard banners (as displayed) that are now displayed in front of each converted Learning Centers. From time to time, an English tutor may even go over to the Math Lab to get some extra help and vice versa.

Looking to the future, these students are even looking to recruit the next group of student tutors who can pick up where they left off. Leadership, as these students are experiencing, is much like a relay race - they’re running their leg but getting ready to pass the baton off to the next leaders. Not only are our Brickies getting extra help, but our student leaders are also growing as leaders and gaining experiences that will yield dividends for years to come. As these student leaders say, they hope their peers take advantage of this resource and build their knowledge and abilities one number or one word at a time.

Khan Academy - Can Help You Achieve More On Your SAT's! Just Ask Zack!

Zack Fattore is currently a senior at Hobart High School. He serves as a leader in a number of ways, including serving as the Senior Class President and a captain of the wrestling team. He is graduating at the top of his class with a 4.61 GPA and is currently ranked as the number 2 wrestler at 170lbs in Indiana. In the Fall, he will be attending the University of Chicago on scholarship for both academics and wrestling.

His GPA and class rank were not the only things that guaranteed his acceptance into a great college or university. There is another piece of the college application puzzle that he, like every other student planning to go to college or earn a technical certificate, had to face - the SAT. With a goal in mind to help educate others about the importance of the SAT, Zack worked with Dr. Buffington, Mr. Krieg, Mr. Crouch, and the Radio/TV class to script, film, and produce a public service announcement on how Khan Academy helped him earn a PERFECT score of 800 on the Math section of the SAT and raise his overall score by over 200 points in just 15 months. You can see the video below!

When we asked Zack about how he prepped for the SAT using Khan Academy, he said:

“When I practiced, I first learned how the SAT is formatted. This helped me because when I took the SAT, I was aware of how the test works and what common questions it asks. The second thing I did was that I took a practice test to determine my current skills. After I saw where my weaknesses were, I planned to improve them. You must do the same and utilize the website’s full potential by targeting what you need. Khan is useful for learning personalization. Once I knew the test and strengthened my weaknesses, the best thing I could do was continually take practice tests and learn from what I was missing.” In Zack's closing statement, his best advice was "Start early. I made so much progress in just 15 months, when I wasn't even practicing the entire time. Imagine if you have 2 or 3 years of practice under your belt. You need to invest your time in this website because it is extremely beneficial.” Hear more from Zack in his video below!

If you haven’t already done so, please go to khanacademy.org and sign in with your school-provided Gmail account.

You Khan do it!
