LMS Library Corner

September 2017 Edition

Welcome!

Lisa and I have been so excited to kick off a new school year in the LMS library! Our already beautiful library has had a bit of a face lift over the summer--we've added a comfortable new seating area for students, replete with a wipeboard table and a magazine spinner; brand new desktop computers for the library computer lab and side computer stations; and even a brand new library website to match the school's new website. Plus, no library would be complete without new books... we also had over 20 boxes of beautiful new books this summer!

In order to introduce our 7th graders to the library (and reorient our 8th graders), Lisa and I have been conducting library orientations through English classes. This has been a great opportunity for us to get to know our students a bit better. Since we wrapped up with our orientations this week, all 1300+ LMS students should now be familiar with our library and its resources!

If you are interested in finding out a bit more about our library program, we recommend exploring our new library website and perusing our LibraryThing virtual shelf. The library website is the best way to find out about library events, new books, and research-related resources. Some other avenues we will use to communicate information this year: Twitter (@LMS1ibrary ), bi-monthly Library Corner newsletters posted in the KIT, and Blackboard. Please feel free to contact us by email (best!) or phone if you ever have any questions!

Battle of the Books Club

Lisa and I will be sponsoring Battle of the books again this year. How to describe this club...? Quiz Bowl meets book club! A club for students who love to read and discuss books and who don’t mind getting competitive! We will be reading and discussing this year’s Virginia Reader’s Choice books (in no particular order). Once we've read a number of the books, students will form teams and compete against each other to see who knows the books the best. Interested students are encouraged to begin reading the books! To find out more about this club, please visit the Battle of the Books Website. Our first meeting will be held after school in Room 121 on Thursday, September 28th.

Silent Sustained Reading

In an effort to encourage independent reading, we will be spying on Lancer Time classes on Friday afternoons to see if students are engaged in silent sustained reading. Classes that we "catch" reading will be awarded a sticker for the week. At the end of the marking period, the classes with the most stickers will have the opportunity to win a pizza party or a cookie party in a random drawing on the student news show. Ms. Hoyle and I are looking for some more parent volunteers to help us with this endeavor. If you are interested in volunteering to help us during Lancer Time on Fridays, please let us know!

Informational Bookmark for Library Patrons

This is a copy of the bookmark we gave to students during their library orientations. The bookmark includes our contact information, links to important websites, and passwords for the FCPS databases and e-Books.
