Science Fun Day Help Wanted!
We are in the planning stages of our 2019 Science Fun Day, and we need your help to make the day a success. Please join us on Tuesday, February 26th at 6:30 PM in the Titus Dining Room for an informational meeting regarding volunteer opportunities. If you are unable to come to our first meeting on the 26th, still register for the meeting, and we will get in touch with you. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kim Anderson.
Your help and support providing the Science Fun Day experience for our students is greatly appreciated!
A few quick things about this week...
Reading
*Please remind your child to be submitting their Reading Book Logs when finished an independent reading book! I want to make sure everyone gets credit towards their reading goal of 6 books per trimester!
Ask me about: How do good readers use text evidence to visualize and identify symbols?
What you can do: Have a conversation with your child about their independent reading. Book conversations can include:
- A summary of what your child is reading
- A conversation about their characters - a contrast & contradiction or an again and again, How is your character changing/growing in your book?, What are some of the character's strengths/weaknesses and why?
- A brief read aloud of their book.
- Ask if they have found any new "robust vocabulary" words to add to their bookmark.
Be sure to check in with your child regarding their independent reading... we are 1/2 way through the 2nd trimester!
Writing
We are wrapping up our research on how different volcanoes form and will begin analyzing our information to determine the main idea of each of our subtopics. Students should be prepared to start organizing and drafting our written pieces next week!
What you can do: Encourage your child to be reading about their list of brainstormed topics and/or watch a video to continue to build background knowledge prior to presearch for Sixth Grade Assessment.
Sixth Grade Assessment ~ Pre-Search Starts Monday!
Although the actual research days are months ahead, students will start PRE-searching topics of interest in the library on February 11th. They will have the next six weeks in library and at home to read about topics of interest to determine TWO different topics they are interested in researching deeply in April.
Keys to a successful Sixth Grade Assessment are:
- High interest in the topic
- Readability (can they understand the information)
- Availability of resources
After they begin Pre-search in school, you will also see their Pre-search sheet come home in the evening. Over the next six weeks, they will be assigned to read about their possible topics and record facts. Later, they will narrow down to two topics of highest interest and develop a question about each. It is very important they keep an open mind and pre-search several topics before settling into one.
Students who choose a topic of interest love 6th grade assessment! They enjoy researching a topic of their choice and overseeing their own learning for a few days! High interest is the key to success!
Microsoft TEAMS
Science ~ Earth's Changing Surface
Ask me about: How does the surface of the earth change? What do you think causes most landforms on earth's surface to change?
What you can do: Notice and observe different surfaces/surroundings and ask what may have caused it to change.
