Understanding Your Child’s NWEA Results
GENERAL INFORMATION:
- NWEA stands for Northwest Evaluation Association, a nonprofit organization working with member schools to use data to improve instruction and student learning.
- MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress and is a series of tests that measure your student’s general knowledge in reading and math. The tests are administered on the computer and each test takes approximately 45 minutes. Students who are not yet considered ready to be independent readers take a version of the test which is read aloud to them through headphones while they mark answers on the computer.
- These tests are aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards.
- Your child will take the NWEA three times this year, in the fall, winter and in the spring.
RIT SCORE:
- RIT stands for the Raush unit. It is an equal interval scale, much like a ruler, which allows us to make comparisons across grade levels and see growth over time.
- RIT scores report a student’s INSTRUCTIONAL level.
- We would expect students to know the answers at this level 50% of the time.
- We would expect students to know the answers to questions below this level most of the time.
- We would expect that students do not know the answers to most of the questions above this level.
GOING OVER THE STUDENT PROGRESS REPORT:
- The RIT scores are listed along the left side of each chart. The dates for the tests are located along the bottom of each chart. As tests are taken in the future, your child’s growth over time in a subject area is charted on the graph.
- The report shows the student’s scores compared to the national average score of same-age peers. Please note that while a child may score quite high compared to national norms, our instruction in our classrooms is pitched accordingly to meet our students’ needs.
- The goal performance areas are listed beneath each chart for each subject test.
- The lexile range is an indicator of the student’s reading level. To learn more about lexile levels, go to www.lexile.com
* The NWEA test is just one piece of the assessment program. Other pieces include teacher assessments, ILEARN (3rd - 8th), IREAD (3rd), CogAT, NWEA Dyslexia Screener, classroom observations, etc.
