Why We Tell The Story- Once on This Island
David Wiesner and The Art of Wordless Storytelling
A master of storytelling through pictures and three-time winner of the Caldecott Medal, David Wiesner (b. 1956) is one of the most highly acclaimed book illustrators in the world. This handsome volume is the first to examine his creative process and his many sources of inspiration. The book features dozens of lavish color plates, from early work to the exquisitely wrought watercolors that are the basis of his best-known books, along with pages excerpted from his forthcoming first graphic novel, Fish Girl. Also included are works by some of the artists most influential to Wiesner, including Marvel comic book legends, Surrealist and avant-garde masters, and mid-20th-century graphic artists. While illustration has often been marginalized in the world of fine art, the vibrant interplay among paintings, prints, comic books, graphic novels, iconic 20th-century films, and cartoons in Wiesner’s art gives evidence to the complexity of the American tradition of picture book illustration.

A Note and a Resource from Andrea at Brophy
Here are a few of my "collection" of calm breathing and mindfulness videos/activities I mentioned yesterday. They, of course, are embraced best by the students that I have had doing it since Kindergarten, bc they know it as part of the routine. Starting fresh with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders can take a few weeks bc some kids may be self-conscious and there are often at least one of two that are uncomfortable with the quiet at first and breath loudly to create attention... A few things help with that. 1) reminding them of the immediate and longer term benefits 2) clarifying that this is part of being responsible, respectful, prepared and even safe (and you can explain how each of these fits- following directions, allowing yourself and those around you to benefit from the activity, etc) and 3) you can let them know that if it is "tricky" (intentionally or unintentionally) to do at first, you are happy to give them individualized practice time at lunch/after class (I did this with a few kids the first year or two... and it not only helped them be successful with breathing calmly with the group afterwards, but it gave us some of that extra getting to know you/bonding time that is so beneficial, too. Again, it may take some time (especially with older grades) for it to feel good to everyone... but you may find it to be worth it. :)

The Department of Community Resource Development, Downtown Framingham, Inc. & The Framingham High School Art Club Collaborate for a Celebration of Global Citizenship and Diversity
May 15, 2019 (Framingham, MA): Framingham Public School’s Department of Community Resource Development (CRD), Downtown Framingham, Inc., and the Framingham High School (FHS) Art Club are proud to present: We Are Many Colors, Part II. Building on previous art exhibitions, this collaborative effort will result in a beautiful mural on one of downtown Framingham’s exposed walls. Working together, these groups have developed an event that highlights student art as a means to celebrate global citizenship and diversity.
The Department of Community Resource Development collaborated with Framingham High School’s Art Club to create an exhibit that would reflect the culture diversity we have in the city of Framingham. In February, as part of Black History month, FHS Art Club held Part I of the 'We Are Many Colors' Art Exhibit to highlight African Americans and their influence on art.
“The mission of the Framingham High School Art Club and the National Art Honor Society is to improve and beautify their community through visual art,” said Caroline DiCicco, FHS Art Teacher and Student Advisor for the FHS Art Club and the National Art Honor Society. “This is the perfect opportunity for these student artists to create a public work of art that both celebrates the unique diversity of our community and engages with community members, but also allows them to leave their mark behind to inspire future generations."
Framingham residents and community members are encouraged and invited to stop by 'We Are Many Colors, Part II' at Tesoro Supermarket 80 Hollis St, Framingham MA 01701 this Saturday, May 18th between 11:00am - 1:00pm. This event will feature a live mural painting by Framingham High School students on the south-facing wall of Tesoro Supermarket.
