Principal's Nest

Finley Farms Community,

The 4th quarter of our school year has gotten off to a tremendous start for Finley Farms Elementary. Over the past two weeks we have continued to engage students in various learning opportunities to go along with campus-wide activities. Most recently our students helped recognize Miss Arner in honor of School Social Worker Week by showering her with thank you cards and notes of appreciation for all she does to support our school. The FFE staff was also able to provide a surprise to Mrs. Anson last week as we celebrated her for the 25 years of explemplary service to education she has provided Gilbert Public Schools.

Looking ahead, we hope all of our FFE families are able to enjoy the extended weekend as we will not have school on Friday (4/2) or Monday (4/5) due to the Spring Holiday. Upon our return next Tuesday, April 6th we will jump right back into activities with the Finley Farms PTO kicking off their Walk it Out event to promote a healthy lifestyle while facilitating community building. Also taking place next week is a spirit day on Wednesday, April 7th in honor Autism Awareness month by encouraging everyone to wear blue!

Following the extended weekend we will be fast approaching our AzMERIT standardized testing for students in grades 3 through 6. Our teachers will be sharing tips and strategies with students to best prepare them for the assessments and it is always good for children to hear from their parents about the importance of tests to showcase what they have learned up to this point in the school year. Please help emphasize with your child that you believe in them and want them to do their personal best.

Continue reading through each section of this Falcon Flyer for pertinent information as we partner together to support our students. Should you have immediate questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly via email (keegan.bassett@gilbertschools.net) or call the office at 480.507.1624 and we will assist.

AzM2 Testing Information

This year our students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in state assessments over the course of the next month. To assist, outlined below you will find information regarding the assessments and how you can support your child(ren).

AzM2 (formerly AZMERIT) Testing: The AzM2 or Arizona’s Measurement of Academic Standards is a computer-based testing format. There are five different sessions; Writing, Reading Part 1 and Part 2, and Math Part 1 and Part 2.

AzSCI Testing: Arizona’s Science Test, administered by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE), measures what students know and are able to do in the content area of Science as presented in the Arizona Alternate Academic Standards. Students will receive test reports with specific information detailing their progress toward meeting the standards.

Frequently asked questions:

Who will take the AzSCI test?

Only our 5th grade students will take the AzSCI test. The test will be administered on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.

Who will take the AzM2 test?

3rd through 6th grade students will take assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

What does a test session look like?

Students will be taking the computer-based AzM2 test which is formatted in a similar style to our district benchmark assessments students complete three times a year. Tests will be proctored in the general classroom setting and we anticipate each section to take approximately 45-90 minutes. The test is untimed and we will have an extended testing location for students that may need longer than the anticipated window of time.

When will my child test?

See schedule below for assigned dates for each grade level.

How can my family help?

All students will need headphones or earbuds for the computer based assessments and it is preferred families provide those for your student(s). Please avoid being late or absent on scheduled testing days for your child(ren). If a student arrives to school late they will either be placed in an alternate testing room or need to complete a makeup test on a different day. Makeup days have been built into the schedule at the conclusion of the initial testing dates. In order for students to be preapred to perform to the best of their ability please make certain that your child(ren) is well rested, eats a healthy breakfast and arrives to school on time.

What are you doing to prepare my child for this test?

All 3rd through 6th grade classes will have had opportunities to become familiar with the student testing portal, the types of questions they will see on the test, and the tools that they will be manipulating in writing, reading, and math. The state has created a website that also allows you to access sample questions:

Congratulations Mrs. Anson for 25 years of service to Gilbert Public Schools!

Face Coverings - Help Needed!

We are down to our last few boxes of disposable face masks and with that we implore all families to send students to school each day with an appropriate face covering. While we will continue to do our best to have supply available in case of emergency need, it is imperative as a community we each take responsibility for ourselves and send students to school prepared with necessary materials, which includes a face covering.

Additionally, in alignment with GPS policy, all persons visiting campus are required to wear a face covering while on any District property. This includes during pick-up and drop-off routines. Please do your part to be a role model for our students and follow the GPS guidelines in place by wearing a face covering if you choose to park and walk onto campus to for drop-off and pick-up.

RISE Junior High Alternative Program

Dear Parent/Guardian of a 6th Grader in Gilbert Public Schools,

As the coordinator of the RISE Junior High Alternative Program, it is my duty to ensure that you are aware of every option available to your child in GPS as he or she transitions to middle school.

It is hard to compete with all of that a comprehensive middle school campus has to offer GPS students...so at RISE, we simply try to serve any and all students who may need a smaller, more personalized, more simplified approach to middle school. Take a moment to read more about RISE! Watch this video to hear about RISE straight from the coordinator!

"When conditions are right, people THRIVE!"

If you are interested, or simply want to hear more about RISE, then please reach out to the Coordinator, Brandon Helton. Seats are limited! Thanks!
