Walt whitman was an American poet, essayist and journalist. He was born on May 31, 1819. He lived in New York as a printer until a major fire burned down the printing district destroying the industry. He became a teacher until 1843 and took up a career in journalism. Whitman was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, and he incorporated both into his works.

Whitman was the first poet that was really focused on America and its people. He is known as the "Father of Free Verse" because he was the first major free verse poet so he changed how people read and write poetry.
