Wood End Wildcat News
January 31, 2021 ~ Cohort A In-Person This Week
Well, this is sure to be one COLD weekend, and it looks like some snow is on the way early next week. With the colder weather, we are reminding families to make sure kids are coming to school bundled up with boots, hats and mittens. We go outside every day if the temperature is above 25 degrees, and we want our students to be warm.
This past week was Mrs. Erb's last week at Wood End for the year. She has been providing amazing art sessions to our students for the past several months. She will finish up the remainder of the school year at Birch Meadow, while our new music specialist, Erin Hussey, joins the Wood End team. Ms. Hussey will follow the same schedule and provide a wonderful music experience for our students for the second half of the school year. We appreciate everyone's patience as Erin adjusts to a new school and another full set of Google classrooms and remote learning.
Our safety upgrades are continuing at Wood End with several new cameras and keyless entry systems being installed. The electrical contractors are currently at Wood End doing this work. All contractors are wearing IDs and have completed CORI checks. They are following all COVID safety protocols. This work is taking place before, during and after school hours with as little disruption to our students' learning as possible. So far the process is working well. We anticipate this work to be completed over the next 4-6 weeks.
Stay warm this weekend!

5th Grade Celebration Planning
All parents of students in Grade 5 are invited to a planning meeting hosted by Dr. King on Tuesday evening, February 2nd, 7-8 p.m. via ZOOM. The link will be sent out to all 5th grade families prior to the meeting time. This meeting is for anyone interested in helping to plan the end-of-year activities for our 5th grade students, including the "Moving On" ceremony and celebration in June. This will be the first of many meetings and we will provide periodic updates to keep everyone informed. We hope you can join us!
Driving Safety Reminder
Also, please do not watch your child walk into the school building in the morning. We have had several drivers distracted by watching children walk to the front entrance and not watching where they are driving. Trust us, we have never lost a child between the sidewalk and the front door, so please pay attention to your driving and look ahead!!
Wood End Meal Train Continues
The goal of this meal train is to provide some nourishment for these beautiful ladies and their families. We thank you for any support you can provide, as well as your thoughts & prayers.
If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to Dr. King. We are happy to help in any way!

Reminders From Our School Nurse
We continue to see cases of COVID in Reading, so please continue to follow all social distancing guidelines and wear a mask! It's helpful to send you child to school with an extra mask in his/her backpack just in case.
We appreciate families keeping children home with any illness symptoms. We also need to keep students out of school if they are awaiting COVID test results. These are important steps to stop the spread of this virus. Please contact the school nurse if you have any questions or need more information.
Happy Weekend!

As we expand our collection to include more diverse books, these wonderful titles are available for check-out!
This is lovely picture book that reinforces the themes of belonging, diversity, immigration and inquiry. “Every kid in Lola’s school was from somewhere else. Hers was the school of faraway places.” Her teacher asks the class to draw a picture of their country of origin. Lola can’t remember as she was a baby when her family emigrated from a Caribbean island to America. “I should talk to everyone who does remember. I should draw from their memories.”
She makes inquiries with her family and neighbors to collect memories of “the Island”. They recall music, beaches, sweet mangoes and a colorful environment. “Even the people are like a rainbow.” They recall fears and difficulties including defeating the “monster” dictator and nature's destructive forces. These tales build Lola’s pride in her heritage and she takes her abuela’s words to heart. “Just because you don’t remember a place doesn’t mean it’s not in you.”

Every child feels different in some way, but Thuy feels “double different.” She is Vietnamese American, and she has two moms. Thuy walks home one winter afternoon, angry and lonely after a bully’s taunts. Then a bird catches her attention and sets Thuy on an imaginary exploration. What if she could fly away like a bird? What if she could sprint like a deer, or roar like a bear? Mimicking the footprints of each creature in the snow, she makes her way home to the arms of her moms. Together, the three of them imagine beautiful and powerful creatures who always have courage – just like Thuy.

Winner of the 2020 Caldecott Medal and the 2020 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, this poem is a love letter to black life in the United States. It highlights the unspeakable trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world's greatest heroes. The text is also peppered with references to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and others, offering deeper insights into the accomplishments of the past, while bringing stark attention to the endurance and spirit of those surviving and thriving in the present.
