Weekly Warrior Update
Student Focused-World Class
A Word from Holly...
Dear JSMS Families,
I hope you are having a relaxing and restful summer and are enjoying every minute with your families! July is here and that means that the beginning of school is just around the corner.
First of all, I want to invite ALL of you to attend our JSMS Back-to-School Bash on Thursday, July 28th from 6:00-8:00 pm. We invite all students and families to join us for a hot dog supper, meet teachers, get student schedules, join PTA and buy t-shirts, and visit with friends. Tours will be provided for new students/families to Sevier. The JSMS cheer and dance teams will also perform, so it is a night you do not want to miss!
I wanted to update you on some exciting changes happening at Sevier this year:
All grade levels at the middle school level will be teamed. In order to best support Sevier students and families, each child will be placed on an interdisciplinary team. Each team is comprised of a Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies teacher. Students on teams will share the same group of teachers. There will be three teams per grade level. Students will interact with students from every team during lunchtime and teams will be intermixed during related arts.
Another exciting middle school update is the addition of Junior Tribe Time. At the end of each day, there will be a 40 minute period when students can receive intervention, re-teaching (tutoring), enrichment and receive homework help. We are excited about the opportunities that this will provide students to receive additional time and support. On Fridays, this time will be used for Full Band, Full Orchestra and for Choral sectionals. Stay tuned for more information.
Spanish I will be offered as a related arts option for eighth graders as a yearlong course this year. Middle School Spanish teachers will be collaborating with Dobyns-Bennett Spanish teachers to provide this course option for students. While Middle School Spanish will not be a “for credit” class, the course will be recognized by Dobyns-Bennett. Students who complete Spanish I as an eighth grader (with a grade of a C or higher) may enroll in Spanish II as a Dobyns-Bennett freshman next fall. More information will be mailed out to 8th graders very soon. If you have questions regarding Spanish I for eighth graders, please call 378-2450 and ask to speak to Nick Roebke.
I hope you have a Happy 4th of July! The next edition of the Warrior Weekly Update will be sent the week of July 18th.
Proud to be a Warrior,
Holly Flora

ATTENTION! NEW DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM FORMING AT JSMS!
Destination Imagination is a competitive educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to writing and starring in their own dramas. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. participate in the program, including several other schools in KCS. This year, John Sevier will be forming a team to compete in this fun and challenging program. We are hoping to begin practices with an informational meeting sometime in late fall. This is a great opportunity for Sevier students to demonstrate our creativity in a fun, yet competitive environment. More information will be available later in the year.
Student Council
Student Council meetings will take place on Tuesdays in Mr. Wagner's room (344) 3:00-3:30. Starts Tuesday, August 9th.
