The Good Friday Agreement

At 5.30pm on Friday 10 April 1998, George Mitchell stated: "I am pleased to announce that the two governments and the political parties in Northern Ireland have reached agreement".

The Agreement Said:

  • Ireland will not be united without a majority support
  • A multi-party government will be in charge
  • All people shall have basic human rights
  • Irish will be taught in all schools
  • Political prisoners will be released
  • Paramilitary groups shall be decommissioned within two years
  • The people of Northern Ireland are allowed to call themselves Irish or British
