Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and was able to enjoy the beautiful fall weather of the Lowcountry! After putting together this newsletter I realized how much is going on at SFCS. This is a true reflection of how vibrant and active our school community is. I am truly grateful for the wonderful group of devoted faculty members, parents and community members committed to our school's mission.

Please note that next Monday, October 21st that there will be no regular classes for students. The faculty members will be participating with their 2nd Diocesan Core Instructional Practices (CIP) Conference of the year. But as communicated in the Saturday, September 14th Howl this will be a Virtual Day for students to make up one of our days for Hurricane Dorian. Teachers will be sending home the lessons for the Virtual Day on Friday, October 18th via email to all the parents. Teachers will also be reviewing the lessons with students on that Friday as well. Lessons will be posted in the next Howl as well as on the SFCS official website.

Halloween is right around the corner. The FSA will be organizing the Trunk Or Treat portion of the SFCS Halloween Parade and has created a Sign Up Genius if you are interested to decorate a trunk. More information is below. The parade begins at 1:30pm at the front entrance of the school. Students cannot wear costumes that include weapons of any kind, fake blood and inappropriate content. Costumes should also be modest in nature and coverage. If you have any questions or concerns about the appropriateness of a costume you may contact your child's teacher. There are many other FSA activities coming up so please check them out in the FSA section below.

The SFCS School Advisory Committee (SAC) is hosting two focus groups in the near future. If you are a parent of a family new to SFCS or a parent of a student in PreK, K or 1st grade then please consider attending. Your input is very valuable. More information is in the SAC section below.

Also this is a big week for our SFCS Athletic Department. This will be the last week of the fall season. Our Volleyball Teams will be competing in the local Lowcountry Middle School Volleyball Championship Tournament followed by the Diocese of Charleston Youth Volleyball Tournament in Greenville, SC. Our Cross Country team will be competing in the championship meet at Hardeeville Middle School this Thursday. Our school community will be celebrating the teams and the students this Thursday at 2:00pm with a Pep Rally in the gym. Go Wolves!!!

As you can see we have a lot going on at SFCS! Looking forward to seeing everyone in the morning.

Sincerely in Christ,

Brian Pope

Principal

Pre-Kindergarten

Check out all the fun happenings occurring in PreK with Mrs. Burke's weekly newsletter.

Kindergarten

Hilton Head Fire & Rescue came to SFCS to visit the PreK and K students to teach them about fire safety. Students also go to check out a fire truck!

5th Grade

The 5th grade students our learning about and praying the Rosary. Did you know that October is the month of the Rosary? Great job 5th grade!

7th Grade Science

The 7th grade has been studying the structure and function of plant and animal cells this week. Our culminating project includes two artistic renderings of the cells. Students selected either a plant or animal cell and then created a scientific illustration of the cell. The illustration was used to create a sculpture of the cell. Currently, the models are drying. We hope you enjoy seeing our work in progress as the clay models are currently drying. Check back next week to see the final sculptures.

Discovery Lab - Kindergarten

This week we explored the concept of buoyancy by building Lego ships and discovered that the design of the ship affected whether the ship would float or sink. At first we wanted our ships to be tall; however, when we placed them in the water they tipped over but they did float. Next we discovered that adding a large base to the ship allowed them to float upright. Finally, we tested our ships to see how many "sailors" or how much cargo (pennies) they could carry before sinking. It was interesting to see how the placement of the cargo affected the ships ability to float. We became expert cargo loaders with only a little practice.

Discovery Lab - 2nd & 3rd Grades

This week we continued improving our paper engineering skills. Our tower building medium was index cards. First we tried using unfolded index cards and discovered that there wasn't a reliable way to use them to make a sturdy structure. We then combined the use of folded and unfolded index cards and found that we could construct tall, well balanced structures. Finally we had fun making short but sturdier structures and pretended to be the "Big Bad Wolf" and blow the house down. They held up well but with a group effort we succeeded in demolishing the buildings. We had fun any way we built it!

PE

Students had PE classes outside this week because of the 2020 Campaign Dinner with the Bishop which was held in the gym. Good thing the weather was nice this week!!!

SFCS Winter Sports Meeting

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to another season of St. Francis Catholic School Wolves
basketball. We will begin the year with a parent meeting on Monday,
October 22 at 5:00 pm in the gym. This meeting will be for the
following teams:

Girls’ Basketball – 5-8 grades
Boys’ Basketball – 5-8 grades
Girls’ Cheerleading – 1-5 grades

In order to have a smooth beginning to the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball
seasons and cheerleading, here are several items that must be attended
to.

Before the meeting, please have the permission/waiver form for your
particular sport completed. I have attached the forms to this e-mail
and they are also available on the SFCS website.

All students who participate must have a physical each year before
they may begin an activity. If you have already turned in this form
for the Fall season, I have it on file. It is good for one year. It
is also attached to this e-mail and the website.

In order to facilitate the volunteer sign-up process, Mr. Misko will
again be setting up the website for you to schedule your Volunteer
times for the upcoming basketball season. Diocesan Policy dictates
that all volunteers who have contact with or are around children must
have completed a Diocesan Background Screening and the Safe Haven
on-line course. The information on these programs is attached to this
e-mail and the website. Please contact the school office for more
information on these programs.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thanks,

Joseph R. Benning
Athletic Director

Fall Reading Frenzy

Dear K - 5th Grade Parents,

Week one results are in and it could go any direction at this point! Weekly reading times are averaged by the number of students in the class, so participation is key! Three more weeks to go and I can't wait to see which class will enjoy a book character dress-up day and Kona Ice Snow Cones during lunch! It's hard to compete with bottle caps but let's get these kids frenzied for reading! The week 2 log is attached and students also received them in Media Science this week.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Safe

WOSF Cookbook

Did enjoy the soup last year at the Soup for Scholarship?! Well now you can have your very own cookbook with the recipes! You can purchase the in the school office for $10.00 each. Proceeds go towards supporting scholarships from the WOSF for students at SFCS.

Halloween, All Saint’s and All Souls Day: A Triple Celebration

Check out this great article from the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) on the history, meaning and ways to celebrate what is known as the "Days of the Dead". Shocked by the phrase, then read the article about why they are called that.

Parish Picnic 2019

Thank you to all the parents and students who came to the Parish Picnic. Also thank you to those that volunteered! It was a wonderful turnout with great weather. The fun, food and fellowship was wonderful.

Confirmation Retreat Information - Attention 8th Grade Parents

The Diocesan team needs to have a count for the Confirmation retreat on November 23rd. The retreat will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Gym. Following the retreat, the confirmandi will be going to confession and afterwards will be attending the 5:30 p.m. mass for the Enrollment Ceremony. We will be providing them with lunch and plenty of snacks.

Bottle Cap Campaign

The students have had a great response to the SFCS Bottle Cap Campaign in support of the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy's Bottle Cap Mural Project. Mr. Pope even added another element to the school wide competition. In addition to the other student incentives, Mr. Pope has promised to take the first class that fills up their container to the Charleston Aquarium! Each class was provided a 33 gallon garbage like the one in school lobby to fill up. The cans hold about 13,000 caps so if every class fills up their can then we will meet our school goal of 100,000 by March 2020. We got this SFCS!
