Summer Reading
Summer 2020
Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members:
Our Department of English extends to each family wishes for continued health and safety. To best meet the emotional and educational needs of our students, we are conducting a modified summer reading assignment this year.
We are beginning the summer reading work on June 2, using the last two weeks of school to give students an opportunity to engage in and perhaps finish the work. Students in grade10 Honors and grades 11 and 12 Advanced Placement classes have separate reading requirements which are also modified and become open to work during English class on June 2.
This yearβs theme is connecting to and living American history. We ask students to examine essential questions surrounding the American story and look towards how history will be written about our individual and collective COVID-19 experiences. Students will view a self-selected documentary film from the list provided. They will then choose two pieces from the accompanying Literature Shelf with which to work. Students will use these two pieces and the documentary chapter to complete a provided organizer in preparation for the September writing prompt. Students will also be asked to consider their own COVID-19 experiences as voices of the futureβs retrospective on this time.
As always, we depend upon all of you to make our summer reading program a success; we thank you in advance for your help and support. Please contact me at ruth.trainor@scituateschoolsri.net if you have any questions. Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Ruth C. Trainor

Great teaching and learning continues in Distance Learning
Academy of Engineering
Introduction to Engineering:
Several weeks ago, students were challenged to brainstorm, analyze options, draw, model, resource, and finally build a device for launching tennis balls as close to 80 yards as possible. This week, students presented their results online. While quarantine has added additional challenges, the students in the Academy of Engineering rose to the challenge to build a catapult, a ballista, and a slingshot.
Civil Engineering and Architecture:
This week students were oriented to surveying. Ordinarily, students would learn this skill using the actual tools of the trade. But due to the safety concerns of quarantine, they learned through simulations using images like the ones below to survey Manning Field.
