March Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Lowell Families-

It is hard to believe that it is already the beginning of March! This month begins Read Across America Week here at Lowell! Each day we have chosen themes and have guest readers visiting classrooms. These themes expose our students to people, thoughts, and ideas that might be different from our own, yet fundamentally we are all more alike than we may know.

Week of 2/28-3/4

  • Monday - Read a book about animals and wear animal print clothing

  • Tuesday - Read a book about a famous American and dress like them. It can be an inventor, artist, educator or more.

  • Wednesday - Read about an influential athlete and wear something to represent your favorite sports team. Green eggs and ham will be served for lunch!

  • Thursday - Read a book about a different culture. Wear something to represent your family’s culture or hometown.

  • Friday - Dr. Seuss Day! Dress up like a character from a Dr. Seuss book or your favorite book character.

In just a few short weeks, we will be heading into Spring Break and following that, we will begin to administer the Wisconsin Forward Exam. There will be more details sent to you about that in the coming weeks, but our Lowell Students will begin our testing cycle the week of April 4th for students in grades 3-5. Testing should be complete at the end of the month. Please keep this in mind if you are thinking of taking any additional time off, as it is very important that your child participates in this testing.

As you will read in this newsletter, our PTO has fun, family-oriented events planned for our students in the coming months. Please consider volunteering to assist with either the April or June events - We can't host these enjoyable gatherings without your help!

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or you would like to share something amazing that is happening, please feel free to contact me!

In partnership,

Dr. Laurie Pogorzelski

Family Engagement Update

Waukesha Public Library K-5 Field Trip MARCH 15th

On March 15th, our students grades Kindergarten thru Fifth Grade are having a field trip to the Waukesha Public Library. At the library they will be able to take a tour of the remodeled children's section, have a scavenger hunt and check out books. Please be sure you turned in your child’s permission slip with library card registration which was due on Monday February 21st. You can contact your child’s teacher with any questions. We are so excited for this opportunity for a K-5 Lowell School Field Trip, sponsored by the Title One Program!

Lowell Showcase of Learning APRIL 21st

Lowell Showcase of Learning will be on April 21st from 5:00-7:00. Students will have the chance to celebrate their learning with their families. Your child will describe his/her goals and what he/she has been working on in class. In the library there will be a spot to learn about SORA, our District Library App, visit with the Waukesha Public Librarian to learn about summer reading opportunities and for adult caregivers learn about our Home Visit Program including creating a Hopes and Dreams Letter that will be delivered to your child at school. Travel the stations and earn a “PAW Stamp” at each location so that you and your family can enjoy dinner in the cafeteria. All Lowell students and families are welcome!!

Madison Avenue Parking Lot Safety

In an effort to protect families walking from the K4 door to their cars, please do not park along the driveway. This is an area that experiences heavy pedestrian traffic, and parked/moving cars along that stretch presents a hazard to students. Parking spots are available in the lower lot, as well as in the upper lot. Madison Ave and Grandview Blvd are other options for parking. As always, please be patient and respectful towards one another...Little ears and eyes are watching and listening to everything that the adults do!

PTO Updates

Thank you to everyone who came to the Winter Dance; it was well attended and fun. We did have some behavior problems with students who were not following the 3 B's: be safe, be respectful, be responsible. Some parents have reached out with their concerns and it is greatly appreciated; we can't fix what we don't know. We are working with Dr. Pogorzelski to find ways to enforce good behavior and safety. This is crucial if we are to continue hosting school events. At our last meeting we discussed a check-in system so that we can ensure students are with their parent/guardian

On April 14th we will host another Family Movie Night. We will need volunteers for this event. Please use the following link:

Please sign up by March 20th! If the link doesn't work, copy and paste into your browser.

We are also getting ready to plan the End of Year Picnic/Spring Carnival! We desperately need volunteers to make this event happen. I've attached the link for the Sign Up Genius below; Please sign up by March 20th, and this will also help for requesting off of work. If we don't have all the spots filled, we will have to cancel the event. As a thank you and for checking in at the event you will receive $5.00 worth of event tickets. These can be used for food, drinks, games, etc.

We will also be sending out a date and time for the first planning session for the picnic ideally around 3/11. It will cover the basics of what we will have for food, games, entertainment, etc. Ideally 4-5 parents or guardians for this committee is ideal.

Our new fundraising project is to raise money for a new playground. The one we have is very out-dated and not ADA accessible. To help raise the funds, proceeds from the remaining events this year will go towards it.
