Principal's Report
Happy Holidays!!
This might seem a little premature, but as this will be the last newsletter for Term 1, so I would like to congratulate everyone on a wonderful first term in 2023. It is hard to believe that at the end of next week, we will be at the end of 10 weeks of learning! Can I especially congratulate our Kindergarten students who, at the end of next week, will have completed their first term of schooling. What a wonderful job they have done in settling into primary school!
It certainly has been a very settled and happy start to the year, which has been reflected in the positive vibe and feel in the school. As a school community, this can only be achieved if we are all “Learning and Working Together” and I thank everyone (students, staff, parents and families) for their support of our school.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday break. The Term 1 holidays are my favourite of the year... The weather is a little cooler, but the days tend to still be warm and perfect for getting out and about. I hope this year is no different!
School resumes for students on Wednesday 26 April 2023 (the school office will be open on Monday 24 April 2023 but closed on Tuesday 25 April 2023). We look forward to seeing everyone return happy, relaxed and ready to learn, for what will no doubt be a busy and enjoyable term at Woonona Public School.
NAPLAN
In Week 8 and 9 our Year 3 and Year 5 students completed NAPLAN testing. Congratulations to all students involved for the enthusiasm and positive attitude shown in your approach. We are very proud of your efforts. Results from these tests will be made available in Term 2, with letters provided to families once received by our school.
P&C Election BBQ
Last Saturday, a crew of dedicated parents spent the day hosting an election BBQ at Woonona Public School. From all accounts it was a huge success, with lots of enthusiastic and appreciative customers throughout the day. I would like to thank the many families who assisted on the day and a special thanks to Terri and Tim from our P&C, for their efforts in coordinating this successful event.
Athletics Carnival
What a fantastic day! It was wonderful to see the students of Woonona Public School striving to do their best and representing their sport house with such pride. We had perfect weather, which was somewhat of a pleasant surprise, and the students were able to enjoy competing in a variety of events. Well done to all our students for displaying great sportsmanship and wonderful behaviour throughout the day. Congratulations to the students who came a place and to those who will be representing Woonona Public School at the North Wollongong District carnival.
A huge thank you to Mr McMullen and Mr Argaet for their fabulous organisation of the day and to our whole K-2 team for bringing together a fun variety of tabloids for our K-2 students. Thank you also to our wonderful parents and carers who came and supported our students, creating a wonderful atmosphere for everyone. A great day was had by all.
2024 Kinder Parent Session
Last night was our 2024 Kindergarten Parent Information Session. It was great to see over 50 parents attend, keen to hear more about our school and the plan for Kindergarten Orientation this year. It may be only Term 1, but lots of planning has already taken place in preparation for this important process. We look forward to working with our future students and their families, throughout the year, to ensure a successful transition to school.
Year 6 Disco Fundraiser
This Thursday is our first disco in some time. It will be great to see students dressed up and excited to spend some time partying with their friends, at an exciting event such as this. A big thanks to Ms Phillips and the organising teachers, as well as the many Year 6 students and families who will be assisting on the night.
Harmony Day
Thursday marks our Harmony Day Celebrations. I’d like to thank the team of teachers who have brought this day together, led by Mrs Ney. Students are encouraged to wear orange (or lots of colour if they have no orange).
School Cross Country
Our competitors only School Cross Country was not only a huge success, but a lot of fun! Congratulations to Mr Samuel and Mr McMullen, who convened the day, and all teachers for supporting the day. A sincere thanks also to our parents who came to support our students.
Finally, well done to all of our students who challenged themselves on our difficult course. There were some wonderful performances, with many children achieving well beyond what they thought they could achieve! Many of our students will now go on to represent our school at District Cross Country on Friday 5 May 2023.
P&C AGM and General Meeting
Our P&C will be holding a meeting tonight, beginning at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held in our Administration Building and will begin with the 2022-2023 AGM, followed by a General Meeting. We hope to see you there!
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher Interviews are occurring next Tuesday, 4 April. Interview schedules are now available on the Parent Portal for parents to select their preferred interview time. Staff are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress and working together to ensure the remainder of 2023 is both happy and successful. Please make sure you are at the designated area prior to your allocated time, as each interview will go for a maximum of 10 minutes. Information on where to meet will be shared closer to the day.
Easter Hat Parade
Our school will be holding our much-anticipated annual Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 6 April at 9:15am. It will take place under the COLA. We can't wait to see students’ creative flair as they parade in front of friends and family. There will also be an Easter raffle drawn, with a large number of prizes on offer, so be sure to purchase your tickets! We are looking forward to a fantastic morning as we celebrate Easter, a successful first term for 2023 and the upcoming school holidays!
State Swimming Carnival
Next week, 11 students from our school will attend the state swimming championships in Sydney. This is a huge team and probably the most we have ever sent. We have a number of students in individual events, while our Junior Boy and Junior Girl Relays are also competing. I would like to wish Jimmy, Reg, Archie, Bob, Maddison, Zoe, Tayla, Indie, Logan, Halle and Cameron all the very best as they compete against the best swimmers across NSW. I know they will give their absolute best, as they represent South Coast, North Wollongong and Woonona Public School.
In addition to this, I would like to pass on our congratulations to Zoe who was announced as the Senior Girl Champion of the Regional Swimming Carnival a couple of weeks ago. Zoe placed in five of her six individual events, which as an outstanding performance. Well done, Zoe!

Inclusive, Engaging and Respectful Schools
The Inclusive, Engaging and Respectful (IER) Schools package was announced in February this year.
It centres on three new policies and procedures and a framework that together set the guidelines for how we ensure all children and young people can learn through public education in a safe and engaging way. The IER Schools package includes the:
- Inclusive Education Policy for students with disability
- Student Behaviour Policy and Procedures
- Restrictive Practices Framework and Restrictive Practices Reduction and Elimination Policy and Procedures.
With these new policies, we want all students to:
- be included in all aspects of school life and supported to learn to their fullest capability
- be supported in engaging, respectful, and effective classrooms with positive and inclusive practices
- feel welcomed, valued and safe in our schools and classroom
For further information on this policy, please refer to our school website.
Easter Hat Parade
The Easter Hat Parade will be held on Thursday 6 April 2023 in the school COLA area. The parade will commence at 9:15am and conclude at 10:15am. It will be a whole school event and all parents and carers are welcome to attend.
In preparation for this parade, all K-2 students will need to bring in a hat along with a small number of items to decorate the hat. The students will construct and decorate their hats at school, with the assistance of their teacher and their classmates.
It is optional for 3-6 students to wear a hat and participate in the parade. If your child is in Years 3-6, they are not required to bring in anything from home as they will be using classroom resources to make a hat.
Harmony Day 2023
“Everyone Belongs”
Harmony Week is celebrated in Australia during the week that includes 21 March, which is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Due to the many disruptions to regular school days during this week, including NAPLAN testing and the rescheduled Cross Country Carnival, Woonona Public School will be marking Harmony Day on Thursday 30 March.
Students will be engaging in classroom activities and discussions and are invited to wear orange, or brightly coloured clothing on this day. There is no donation required on this day.

These students will represent our school at the District Cross Country Carnival, which will take place on Friday 5 May (Week 2, Term 2) at Bulli Park. Library News
It has been a very busy term in the Library with lots of reading happening with the start of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Most children have recorded 14 books already on their reading lists and we even have a few super enthusiastic students who have completed the 20 books for PRC already. Well done to all student for their efforts this term. If students read additional books over the holiday break, they can head to the PRC student site to logon and record their books.
Week 11 will be our last week for Library with all students expected to return loans before the holiday break. There will be no borrowing next week. End of term overdue notices for books will be emailed and handed out over the next week. Can parents please help their children locate any overdue books and return to the Library as soon as possible. If a book has been lost, parents can pay for a replacement at the office or online from the WPS website. Book prices are listed on the overdue notice form. Thank you to those families who have already located overdue books or paid for replacements.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing Easter break and look forward to seeing students back in the Library next term. Remember even though students are on holidays encourage them to continue to read for enjoyment over the break.
Happy reading,
