Deer Hill School News . September 9, 2022
Dear Deer Hill Families,
What a fabulous first week of school we've had! It's always the best feeling to see the smiling faces of students in the halls again. This newsletter shares some important reminders (more than usual!) as well as some highlights of the last several days. Thank you for taking the time to stay informed and share in our joys.
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School

Need to Knows
Verify and update contact information in Aspen's Family Portal
All parent/guardians of CPS students are now able to verify and update their contact information in Aspen's Parent Portal. The workflow is intended for a parent/guardian to electronically update (per student) the following information:
- Physical Address Change
- Emergency Contact changes (add/delete/change)
- Handbook Acknowledgement
- Can student be photographed
- Can the district share information with PSO/CEF
- Military Status
Please follow the steps provided at the link below to learn how to verify and update your child's contact information in Aspen.
- Today in your child's backpack, you'll find the annual Confidential Health Form from Nurse Bulman's office. Thank you so much for completing this form and returning it to school by Wednesday, September 14. All students who return it by Monday will be given a free pony. (Kidding. . . just checking to see if you're still reading.)
- Our breakfast and lunch service has had a successful launch this year. We had over 100 students eating breakfast this morning! Please note that while all students are welcome to one free breakfast and lunch, they must have money in their MySchoolBucks accounts if they wish to purchase a second lunch or a snack. A different snack is offered each day of the week with ice cream on Fridays. Students are not allowed to make purchases for their friends.
- Picture Day is Monday, October 3. ALL photo ordering will be online through Lifetouch. Look for an email that will come to you directly from Lifetouch, or you can go to mylifetouch.com and enter code EVTC8V8T3. Additionally, there is a pdf attached in the Flyers section at the end of this newsletter.
- Uh-oh. We are increasingly sharing our neighborhoods with coyotes who have been seen on the walk to and from school. Thank you for reminding your walkers to stay alert. According to the Urban Coyote Research Project website, "if you see a coyote during the daytime, you should exhibit caution, as that coyote may have become habituated to humans (and may be more likely to attack). If you are approached by a coyote, you should yell, wave your arms, and/or throw something at the coyote (do not run away)."
- Please see this letter from Barbara Cerwonka, Director of Student Services, that outlines our MTSS (multi-tiered system of supports) process in Cohasset Public Schools.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- To keep things joyful for everyone at Deer Hill, we ground everything we do in the Skipper Creed. To launch the new year, we had an all school behavior expectations assembly today. Feel free to take a peek at the slide deck that was shared with students.
- In our last newsletter I shared progress on the Deer Hill courtyard's transformation to a true outdoor learning space thanks to a generous grant from the CEF. The work was completed just before the start of school and has already gotten use from multiple classes. Many thanks to not only the CEF, but also Holly Hill Farm, Kennedy Country Gardens, Herzog Landscaping, and Peregrine White Sawmill & Services. We love our new learning courtyard!
- Deer Hill has gone gaga for our new GaGa Ball Pit! This pit was donated to Deer Hill by Nora Elwell, who constructed it for her Eagle Scout project. It got lots of use by rec camp this summer and has been a huge hit this first week of school. I watched several games and was so impressed by how well large groups of kids played and had fun together. If you checked out the behavior expectations assembly slide deck, you'll notice that some of our own teachers also gave it a whirl!
