News from Wildcat Country -January 23, 2020

Administrative Note

Each January the Novi Schools help support our local food pantry by hosting a food drive. This year, NMS has been assigned to collect boxed pancake mix and/or syrup! Each school is working to collect specific needed items and we hope that NMS can rally to do our part! Please help if you are able. We'd like to fill 6+ boxes before Friday, February 7th, and all items help people in our community who are hungry. We will have a competition by A-20 class. All donations can either be dropped off in the Main Office or delivered to A-20 teachers. Thank you!

Speaking of our Novi community, please consider joining the Unity in the Community event to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is held on Monday, January 20th at 7:00 pm in the Fuerst Auditorium at Novi High School. The event features performances, student essays, and great speakers! Have a great weekend!

Food Pantry

Dear Parent/Guardian of Novi Middle School Students, A few of our local churches and organizations in Novi are providing a food pantry to any Novi Middle School student and their family that are in need. We could either send a bag of groceries home with your student (please provide a back pack or similar type of carrying bag) or a parent/guardian is welcome to come into the Counseling Office here at Novi Middle School and pick up the items. Please contact me either by phone, or email, and I would love to get you set up. The local churches and organizations come into the middle school weekly and restock the shelves, so you are welcome to come in every week.

Schoology - Grade Reporting

This year up-to-date grade and assignment reporting will take place through Schoology. Hopefully you have received the parent access code specific to your student. If you have not, please reach out to your student's A20 teacher. We have moved to this platform to provide consistency and simplicity for both student and parent access to grades and instructional materials. There is also a Schoology App that you may be interested in using.

Don't miss out on the memories; order your yearbook now! All NMS yearbooks sales are online this year! Visit to order your yearbook for $35. Price will increase in January. Yearbooks will be delivered to students in June.

Avoiding Lice

As school is now in session, it is important to remember the guidelines for avoiding head lice. It has been found in classrooms around the district already this year so please be vigilant in looking for it and treating it effectively. The website below has very helpful information.

Vision Screening for 7th Grade

The Oakland County Health Division Vision Screening will take place at Novi Middle School from February 19 to March 2, 2020. We do not test hearing at the middle school level. Screenings are required by Michigan Law (The Public Health Code 368 of 1978) and are provided annually in Oakland County schools by Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) at no cost. Screenings help identify vision and hearing difficulties that can affect a child's school performance, speech and language skills and social development. OCHD Public Health Technicians do not diagnose any conditions but can make parents/guardians aware if a child may need further follow-up from a doctor.

  • Vision screening occurs in pre-school, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th grades

  • Hearing screening occurs in pre-school, kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades

Please ensure your student is in attendance on screening days. For more information visit call OCHD’s Hearing and Vision program at 248-424-7070, or contact your child’s school.

Ski /Snowboard Club

Novi Middle School Ski / Snowboarder Club Information:

What is Ski/Snowboarder Club?

The ski club is for any Novi Middle School skier and/or snowboarder. It is an opportunity to have fun with your friends on the slopes of Alpine Valley Ski Resort. Nevertheless, students will be EXPECTED to follow Novi Middle School and Alpine Valley policies (see attached forms), as well as all instructions of the ski/snowboarder club sponsors, chaperones, bus drivers and Alpine Valley employees. To maximize the enjoyment of all, anybody who chooses not to follow instructions, is late for the bus, or is not picked up after the trip on time will be excluded from future Novi Middle School Ski Club trips.

How do I sign up for Ski/Snowboarder Club?

Pick up an informational packet from the office, read it over with your parents. By 12:00p.m., the Wednesday before the trip, you must bring the Parent Consent Form, Ski/Snowboard Rental Contract and a check to the main office. Ski/Snowboard Rental Forms will be provided to students the day of the trip. Please make the check out to Novi Middle School and write the student’s name, and what they are purchasing on the memo line. We have to notify Alpine Valley in advance, therefore we cannot accept any checks/consent forms/liability agreements/rental forms after 12:00p.m., Wednesday before the trip. You will only have to turn in the required paperwork before your first trip. Beginning with the 2nd trip, you will only need to turn in your check.

When does Ski/Snowboarder Club meet?

(Please note these dates are all weather permitting)

· January 24, 31

· February 7, 14, 21, 28

· Students must go home after school and then come back and meet in the NMS cafeteria no later than 4:30 p.m. the day of the trip. Busses leave at approximately 4:45 p.m.

How much is the trip?

In order to receive the group rates, each skier/snowboarding must purchase a “Club Card”. These cost $20 and come with two free ski lessons, or one free snowboard lesson. The Club Card also includes five separate $5-off lift tickets for any other dates (there are no blackout dates for these discounts). Parents may also purchase a Club Card if they wish to ride along with the Ski Club at the same rates. However, they may not receive a discount for lessons. The following prices are for Club Card members only, and you must purchase one to join the ski club.

o Club Card $20

o Ticket (with Club Card) $20

o Ski/Snowboard Rental $20

o Helmet Rental $10

o Additional Lesson $10

Please stop by the Main Office to pick up your packet.

New Athletic Website

We are very excited to announce that the Novi Community Schools Athletic Department has partnered with FinalForms, online forms, and data management service. FinalForms allows you to complete and sign athletic participation forms for your students. The most exciting news is that FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice! FinalForms also pre-populates information wherever possible, for each of your students, saving you time.

You may review your data at any time to verify it is current. You will be required to sign your forms once per year and after any update.

Click on the Parent Playbook (attached) to get started in FinalForms. If you require any support during the process, scroll to the page bottom and click “Use Support”.

We are asking that ALL parents of athletes use FinalForms.

Please register at:

and follow the prompts to create your account, create your students and sign your forms.

Thank you for your assistance in streamlining our paperwork processes at Novi Community Schools.

The Michigan Child Protection Registry

The Michigan Child Protection Registry, administered under our Secretary of State’s office, is dedicated to stopping minors, parents and other caregivers from receiving any solicitations from gambling, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and pornography companies via email and text messaging. You can visit the Registry at

There are 4 things you can do to help get this information out to parents:

  1. Include information about the Registry in a newsletter. I’ve attached a copy of what other schools have used in the past in their newsletters.
  2. Include a link to the Registry somewhere on your website.
  3. Include a brief description and a link to the Registry on your Facebook page. (I can assist you with the wording.)
  4. If you are looking for someone to talk about the Registry, internet safety and the popular apps that teens are using, please contact me. I speak to a lot of parent groups all around Michigan.

I can’t stress enough how important internet safety and this Registry is in helping to keep our kids safe while using any type of mobile device. Please let me know if you can help us inform parents of this resource, if you have any questions or need additional information. Thank you so much and have a great day!

Morning Drop-off/Afternoon Pick-up

Please refer to the map below for drop-off and pick-up traffic flows. These are designed to provide two loops and a safe exit for students to exit/enter directly onto the sidewalk in front of the school. One loop serves those cars entering from the Wixom entrance. The other is for those entering off of 11 Mile.

Please do not plan to pick up or drop off on the east side of the building. This area is reserved for school bus drop-offs and pick-ups. Thank you for your patience and for helping to keep all of our Wildcats safe.
