Scientific Debate of the Century
Ernest Rutherford vs. Niels Bohr
The Event of the Millennium!
British physicist Ernest Rutherford and Danish physicist Niels Bohr are going to be debating atoms and the atomic theory! This Friday (February 7, 1919) at 4:00 P.M. in the Nardini Library, you will be able to witness the brilliance or these two incredibly influential individuals discuss the atom in order to bring out the truth that will be taught in schools all around the world from that point forward, perhaps even for hundreds of years. This is a once in a lifetime, no, this is the only time this will ever happen. EVER! So be sure to make it to the Nardini Library this Friday, at 4:00 P.M., and witness this historical event with your own eyes!

Physicist Ernest Rutherford
Conducted gold foil experiment. Showed that atomic nucleus consists of protons and neutrons. Found that the nucleus of an atom is small compared to size of whole atom. Said electrons fill up the rest of the atom. He suggested that electrons might revolve around the
nucleus like the planets revolve around the sun in the solar system. He couldn't explain why the negative electrons aren't attracted into the positive nucleus, causing the atom to collapse.
VS
Physicist Niels Bohr
Pictured the electron moving in circular orbits corresponding to the various allowed energy levels. Suggested that electrons could jump to a different orbit by absorbing or releasing a photon of light with exactly the correct energy amount. Believed energy levels in the hydrogen atom represented certain allowed circular orbits.
