Pinehill School News
19th May 2021 - Week 3 Term 2
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora tatou,
Week 3 is upon us already! Learning at Pinehill School continues to be content-rich, clearly focused, fun and engaging. I am loving the time I am spending in classrooms talking to the students and teachers about the learning that is going on.
Last Thursday we conducted a lockdown drill. This provided us an opportunity to practise what we would do and how we would act in the case of a real lockdown. I was very impressed with how sensible and responsible all our students were throughout the drill. Our lockdown advisor also commented on the responsible and safe actions of our students and staff during this time. You would have received notification of the drill through the SchoolApp and email. It is timely to download the SchoolApp if you haven’t already for future notifications. In a real lockdown situation, you will also receive a text message notifying you of the lockdown, as well as an update every 15 minutes via the SchoolApp.
Cross Country
All our classes are training hard for our up and coming school cross country event. This will be held next Monday 24th May. We welcome our parents, families and whanau to come along and take part in this day. Your clapping and cheers of support on the sideline are always welcome. The Year 0-2 event will start at 9:00am with the Year 3-6 starting at 10.30am. The Coffee Guy truck will be in the car park from 8:30am for anyone wanting to purchase and enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate on the sideline during the cross country events.
Phones and devices
A reminder about mobile phones and smartwatches. We recommend students do not bring a mobile phone to school and that their smartwatch is switched off during the learning school day. If you are needing to get an urgent message regarding pick up changes etc to your child, please call the school office by 2pm and we will deliver the message to your child for you. Any mobile phones that do come to school will need to be in the student’s school bag for the day. The school is not responsible for any loss or damage to phones or smartwatches. We believe that providing an environment where students can focus on learning and interpersonal interactions, rather than social media and text messaging etc, is far more beneficial.
If students are using their phones or smartwatches during the day, the items will be held securely at reception for collection at the end of the school day. The items can be collected before reception closes at 3.30pm or collected the next day. Our local immediate schools also follow these procedures.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman, Principal

PINK SHIRT DAY - Friday 21 May, gold coin donation (mufti day wearing pink)
Aotearoa will be transformed into a sea of māwhero/pink as we stand together to spread aroha,
celebrate diversity and end bullying!
By celebrating Pink Shirt Day and raising money to support the kaupapa. Tauira/students will be part of a powerful movement to spread aroha and kindness and end bullying. Every dollar raised goes towards the Pink Shirt Day kaupapa. Your support enables the Mental Health Foundation to run Pink Shirt Day, raise awareness about bullying prevention and provide resources that promote inclusive schools, workplaces and communities. Bullying is a serious issue for tauira. Aotearoa has the third-highest rate of school bullying out of 36 OECD countries
Specialist Education Service Provider: In our school in Week 5 of this term.
Pippa Biggs, a specialist education service provider, living locally, is providing our school community access to specialist services without the wait or the fuss. This is a paid service and should you choose to take this opportunity for your child, you will pay the service provider directly. This company provides a range of services, but for this particular screening session, we are focussing on learning difficulties and/or barriers associated with reading and writing.

Bake Sale Thank You
THANK YOU
Our Bake Sale last Thursday was a huge success. We raised $738.70 and all proceeds will go towards the Year 5/6 EOTC shortfall.
We’re thrilled to see so many parents and students came to support this event. A special thank you to our Year 5/6 students and parents who provided those amazing baking! We couldn’t have done it without all of you!
Sports News
We have a space available on our Flippaball team for Term 2. Children ideally should be able to confidently swim 25m, and be in Years 4, 5 or 6. This is a new team for 2021 so no experience is necessary.
Games and training are held at AUT Millennium, 17 Antares Place. Training is on Saturdays and the games are played on Sundays.
You are welcome to attend a Saturday practise if you are interested, before signing up!
Fees for Term 2 are $85.
Please contact Jen if you are interested in playing via email: sport@pinehill.school.nz
Cross Country
Year 0 - 2 children will be starting at 9am. We would like to encourage you to have your child/ren dressed in their house colours; red for Rakino, blue for Motuihe, yellow for Waiheke, and green for Kawau. Whilst you do not need to buy anything special for this event please consider whether they have clothes and shoes on which are suitable for running in. The children will change back into school uniform and shoes after the race.
Years 3-6
The first race will be for Yr3 girls, starting at 10.35, followed by Yr3 boys, Yr4 girls and so on. The last race will be for Yr6 boys at approximately 12.15. Each race takes about 15 minutes.
Children should come to school in school uniform and bring appropriate clothing (shorts, t-shirt) for running. Shoes are optional.
Parents are welcome to come and support our students on the day.
Yr5/6 Cross Country Training
The school cross country event will be held on Monday 24th May (savaday 25th). Inter-school races will be held on Tuesday 8 June ( savaday 10th).
All children are expected to bring suitable clothes for running. Training shoes may be worn, or bare feet. School shoes are unsuitable.
Cross country training will be at 12.05 every day except Fridays. We have a short lead-in time to our school cross country day so it is important that children are properly prepared and put the effort into training. The office is not able to provide a change of uniform if children get muddy. The change of clothing is therefore very important.
Thank you for your support.

Walking to School Week
There are two days remaining to walk to school and try to earn points for their houses. Remember that students can earn points by walking all of the way or part of the way to school. This means that even students who come in cars can earn house points as long as they get dropped off around a corner or on a side road and walk from there. However, students who use the drop-off zone will not earn house points. So, if you are driving your children to school, please try dropping them off somewhere other than the drop-off zone so that they can participate. They will be met close to the gates by House Leaders who will give them stickers to add to their house chart.
Walking to school is a great way for students to get fit, talk with their friends and earn points for their houses. It will also free up the streets around the school by taking some cars off the road which will improve the environment for all of our regular walkers.
