Selby Public School
November Newsletter
News & Notes
October is in the books, and the school year continues to fly by! November will bring a continued focus on learning and growth, but also a chance to pause, reflect on, and pay tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed to keep our country free.
November is also Indigenous Education Month. Teachers will be using a variety of age-appropriate resources and activities to increase students' understanding of the cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples. We will also do announcements each morning to provide further information on this topic, while acknowledging our location on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe (pronounced Ah nish na bay), and the Haudenosaunee (Ho den oh snow nay).
On our PA Day, staff were privileged to hear key-note speeches from Dr. Niigaan Sinclair and Dr. Jean Clinton (see video below) on the topics of Indigenous Education and Children's Mental Health. We will strive to use the learning from that day to continue making Selby P.S. an inclusive, and mentally-healthy school, where ALL students feel safe, comfortable, and are able to learn.
Our Terry Fox Run/Walk was a huge success again this year. As a result of the amazing fund-raising by our students and their families, Mr. Craig, Mr. Scott, and Mr. Hill had to eat chocolate pudding, using someone else's arms! Overall, we raised $1710.00 for Cancer research. Amazing!
Congratulations to all of our Cross-Country Runners who worked hard in preparing for and completing both the Regional and District races at Fort Henry. Volleyball teams are currently practicing in earnest for their upcoming tournaments.
Lastly, Mrs. Gallagher wishes to thank everyone in the Selby Public School community for their kindness and support after the unexpected loss of her daughter, KellyJo. She was extremely touched, yet not surprised, by the outpouring of love from students, families, and staff. All of us are glad to now have Mrs. Gallagher back where she belongs.
Have a wonderful month,

Head Lice
Often, we are asked why students are not sent home anymore when they are found with head lice or nits. The Canadian Pediatric Society, among other Health Organizations, do not recommend sending children home who have lice. Please see the information below for answers to some common questions about this topic, as well as contact information for a local organization who can provide in home support. Don't hesitate to call the school if we can help in anyway.
PARENT COUNCIL
Our next meeting is Thursday, November 30th, at 6:00 pm. At our first meeting in September, the following people were elected to the council:
Chairperson - Norah Brien
Treasurer - Michele Williams
Secretary - Corinna Geenevasen
Babysitting will be provided! While the Council very much needs members who can volunteer at events and help out with fund-raising, anyone is welcome to attend meetings, even if it's just to listen. We hope to see you soon!
Parent Council have started a Facebook page for sharing information - please "like" it at https://www.facebook.com/selbyschoolPAC/ to receive updates.
