The Caterpillar Class
Looking back ...
The children were very busy and happy in January. The classroom was bursting with this new energy. It is beautiful to see the students engrossed in activities and asking for more. Please refer to the pictures below to see how busy your children have been this past month. We learned about islands and lakes by working with Land and Water Forms. The continent map was very exciting as well. The children were fascinated with different continents and the animals that inhabit each of the continents.
In addition, they learned that we all live on the continent of North America. It is a hard concept for them to grasp but it opened up their horizons. The most enjoyable activity for all of the children was “wood work”. Every child had their own creation and worked on it continuously for a couple of weeks. There was lots of concentration and gooey glue. Just look at the impressive works of art they made!

Working with the continent map
Welcome to February!
February is dedicated to the human body and feelings. We will explore the inside of our bodies by doing fun projects and reading books. We will have a dentist come to our school and provide information about healthy teeth and how to properly brush them. In addition, we will talk about our feelings and how different situations with friends or in our lives make us feel and we will learn how to deal with them. Meantime we will celebrate Valentine’s Day by bringing in Valentine’s and sharing them with all of the children at school. During the classroom work time, we will “write” little notes to put in the classroom’s mailbox and talk about the letters and feelings that go along with them.
We started a sewing activity last month (yes, with real needles) and we will build on it this month by sewing designs and finally compiling a quilt. The Land and Water forms were popular last month, so we will continue with an introduction to the bodies of water “bay” and “cape”.
Since children were fascinated with the continent map. We will learn about the continent of North America, California and Petaluma. I have been hearing lots of counting and you could reinforce it by letting them count everyday objects. We will play an “I spy game” with objects and talk about the sounds in our names and much more.
