Dear Parents and Staff

With less than a week to go in the Term I’m again wondering where the time has gone. I think that the busyness of the moment that we find ourselves in throughout the Term often draws our focus away from where we are in the context of the year. A comment that I hear quite often is that there is always something going on at our school and this is evident when we look back over the Term calendar. With Confirmation, Presentation Day, Assemblies, Fathers’ Day, Grandparents’ Day, Performing Arts, Athletics, excursions, 2020 Kindy Parent meeting, Book Week Parade and activities, Night of the Notables presentations, Masses and Liturgies, on top of all of the great class teaching, we’ve barely had time to catch our breath and I’m sure the forthcoming holidays will be appreciated by all. As the children finish on Wednesday next week, there won’t be a Newsletter, so I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to this being such a successful Term and wish all members of our community a relaxing and safe break from the school routine.

SENIOR DANCE GROUP

Last Monday I was treated to an outstanding evening of entertainment at the Perth Concert Hall showcasing the talents of students from Catholic schools throughout Western Australia. This was the final concert for the Performing Arts Festival and many individuals and groups, including our Senior Dance Group, were invited to perform. It was a very late night for our dancers and when I had the opportunity to ask the organising committee why this was so they said that they wanted the evening to conclude with a very engaging performance which the girls and boys in our troupe certainly provided. The Executive Director of Catholic Education, Dr Debra Sayce, also made a point of speaking with me at the end of the evening to tell me how impressed she was with their performance, very high praise indeed. We are all very proud of our dancers and Mrs Donovan-Flintoff who prepared them so well. Congratulations to all involved.

JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Whilst the weather was far from perfect for our Carnival this morning, this certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of our competitors from Pre-Primary to Year Two who all participated to their potential in the wide range of events that Mr Webb had organised. Thank you to all of the parents and staff who assisted in making this a fun and engaging event.

Here are the Junior Carnival results:

SCHOOL GARDENING

Woolworths have announced a new campaign called “Discovery Garden” where they have launched their collectable seedling kits. For every $30 you spend at Woolworths, customers can collect a seedling kit. Also, if you spend $15 on fresh fruit or vegetables within the $30 you’ll also receive a bonus seedling kit. They have a collection of 24 different varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs to collect. The campaign started on 11 September and will finish on 22 October.

So, when you do your shopping and you are offered a seedling kit, if you don’t want it, please still accept it and consider donating it to Notre Dame School because we would be delighted to receive it from you. We will use seedlings in our school vegetable garden and other gardens around the school. Just drop them into at the office and we will take care of them.

Many thanks

Bro Stephen Barker OSM

RENOVATIONS

I look forward to staff and students using our newly renovated facilities as we begin next Term. Thank you to everyone for their patience throughout this Term as the works have been completed. I’m sure everyone will agree that the disruption has been well worth putting up with when they see the benefits that these facilities will bring to our school.

END OF TERM

Children and staff are invited to wear neat casual clothes to celebrate the end of Term next Wednesday. We would appreciate a gold coin donation for the missions for the privilege.

GREEK MYTHS AND LEGENDS

This term, the year sixes have been working extremely hard on their Greek myths and legends trading cards. Each student chose a Greek god, such as Apollo, a goddess, such as Artemis, a mortal, such as Arachne, and a creature, such as Pegasus and put them onto Pokémon style trading cards. They had to write a short paragraph on each character and draw a picture on the other side. They then laminated them so the extraordinary pieces of work don’t get ruined. They look amazing and are very informative.

Senior Dance Group – Year 6

Big picture

On the 23rd of August the Notre Dame dance group performed at the Perth Convention Centre. Their theme was “Wear Sunscreen”. Not only did the costumes look fabulous but it carried an amazing message. The judges loved their performance so much that they received the “Presentation Sisters Award” and invited the senior dance group to perform on Monday 16th September at the Perth Concert Hall. The Notre Dame senior dance group worked very hard as they only had one week to practice. Well done to Mrs Donovan-Flintoff and the Senior Dance group.

Parabolic Curve Art

In Year Six, we have been doing parabolic curves, which are curves made of straight lines (yes, it is real and entirely possible). To make them we had to: draw an 18 x 18 design, then paint a piece of wood, then tape the design onto the board, hammer nails into the design then finally, rip off the design and wrap string around. During the hammering, we made a lot of noise (as you might have heard). Now, that the process is finished, they all look great. Good job year sixes!

Confirmation

Confirmation is a sacrament that seals you with the Holy Spirit and you renew your Baptismal promises. In class we learnt about the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the 9 Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

On the 2nd of September we went on a retreat where we played games that helped us recognise the Gifts and Fruits and we also talked about how we can use these Gifts and Fruits in our

everyday life.

I can’t wait to make my Confirmation because in life I would like to live like Jesus and to do that I would need the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Book Week

On the 14 of August, the school had the book week parade. This year's theme was 'Reading is my Secret Power'. There were many fantastic costumes and a big variety of book characters that the students had chosen. One child from each class was chosen as the best dressed. The next week we had Book Week. Mrs Sarmardin made some fun activities such as, who could draw the best book mark. She also put some short sentences from different books around the school and the library so the students could guess what book the sentence came from.

SENIOR DANCE GROUP

The Notre Dame Dance Group have had an exciting week. Not only did they receive an Outstanding Certificate for their performance and win the Presentations Sisters’ Perpetual Shield for Primary Dance, but they were also invited to perform at the Perth Concert Hall on Monday night, 16 September as the finale act.

They once again performed amazingly! The cheers from the audience were wonderful.

The backstage crew, at the Concert Hall, commented on their excellent behaviour, vibrant energy, fabulous dancing and wonderful costumes and props.

Congratulations to all the dancers. I am really so proud of you all!

I would like to say a special thank you to all the wonderful staff and parents who provided extra support throughout this past week. I really appreciated the assistance with costumes, hair, makeup and supervision at the venue. It is your help, that allows us the opportunity for the children to look fantastic and dance amazingly.
