What's New This Week?

Language Arts

We will begin our 2nd lesson in language arts. Each lesson/week has an "Essential Question". Our main story selection this week is titled My Family, and is a non-fiction informational text. This week it is "How are families alike and different?" Target skills are compare and contrast, short vowels (o,u,e) and CVC syllable patterns. In writing we will be composing a friendly letter. The spelling quiz for lesson 2 will be on Friday, September 23rd.

Spelling Words

wet job hug rest spot mud left help plum nut net hot get not
Challenge words: lunch spend

Our spelling test will usually be on Fridays. Although we focus on these words all week in class, it would be helpful to review with a "practice test" on Thursday nights.

Word lists can be found on our classroom website along with a link to the website Spelling City. http://www.crsd.org/Page/16692

This website is a great resource for your child with fun spelling games and practice tests using their word list.

** Our first real spelling test will be on Friday, 9/23. Please be sure to review the words at home.

Topic 1 test will be coming home in a brown envelope for you to see, sign, and return.

Topic 2 is about addition strategies, and concepts include adding doubles, near doubles, adding in any order, adding 3 numbers, making 10 to add 9, and making 10 to add 8. Our problem solving strategy will be draw a picture and write a number sentence.

Most math topics are fairly short. We will be finished Topic 2 at the end of this week. A test review is scheduled for next Monday, and our test is on Tuesday 9/27.

First in Math news - this fun math program arrived and your child received his/her login information which was placed with the other labels on the inside cover of their homework book. This is a wonderful activity to help strengthen your child's math skills on different levels, and I will begin announcing our First in Math Player of the Week beginning next week!

Websites and Passwords

Inside the cover of your child's homework book is a label with their user name and password for our Journeys language arts website, enVisions math website, and First in Math. These websites are a wonderful way to review skills with your child, to access their missed school work due to an absence, or to print out a homework page in math if they forgot their book at school.

All About Me Posters

Please continue to send in the All About Me Butterflies. They look awesome hanging in our room, and we can't wait to have everyone's butterfly!

Box Tops - Did you know that last year we collected a total of 143,620 Box Tops? That's $1436.20 for our school!! This year we plan on breaking that $1500.00 mark. Do you think we can make $2000.00? Mrs. Rice's class alone collected 1,818 Box Tops last year - the most out of all the homerooms. The entire 2nd Grade collected 2,611 Box Tops, more than any other grade level. The Box Tops are collected at the end of every month and the winning class gets to choose between a Gym Class with Mr. Smith or a Pajama Day! So "Clip 'em & Turn 'em in!" Each classroom has a Collection Box. You are welcome to use the Collection Sheets that are posted to the eFriday Folder each month, or you can simply cut out the Box Tops and put them in a bag or envelope. Whichever is easiest for you!

Relay for Life at RHE!

A new and exciting event will be taking place at Rolling Hills Elementary this year. The American Cancer Society® Relay For Life®, we are having our very own Relay Recess at our school!

Rolling Hills students can raise funds during the walk-a-thon by selling/purchasing luminaries ($1 each), shopping at our Relay Shop the week of the event, and purchasing a lap bracelet ($1) to keep track of their laps during our relay.

We will have a wear purple day for our event which will take place on Friday September 30, 2016 and should be a fun filled event for the kids! If you are interested in helping out on September 30th and have submitted your clearances please contact Kelly Korn
