EIMS Technology Update
October 2017
"New" Tool of the Month: Flipgrid
Flipgrid is a great tool that has a free, single-grid version that allows teachers to engage their class by giving students a voice. Flipgrid is a platform where students can create 1min 30sec short videos to respond to any topic created by you. Teachers create a free account online where you create one grid and add as many topics as you'd like. Every topic you create on your grid gives you a code that you will share with students. Students can download the Flipgrid app, enter in your code and start creating! Students can watch the video responses of their peers as well. This is a great tool to give all students in your class an opportunity to have a voice!
This is what students will see when you give them a description of their task.
This is what you will see on your teacher account after students have submitted their videos.
You have the option of sharing any of the student videos by an url link or a QR code.
Classroom Spotlight: Technology with Ms. Melidona
I Am Project
Students in Ms. Melidona's technology classes used time in the beginning of the school year to experiment with a new app called Clips. Their task was to familiarize themselves with this new tech tool while finding a creative way to introduce themselves to Ms. Melidona. Check out some of the videos below!

EIMS Technology Toolkit
Are you looking for a new tool to try or may have forgotten the name of tool you had seen/heard used before? Below you will find a list of web tools and apps that are used around our building. Each tool has a picture of the app and/or a website link if it is a tool that is web based. I have included a description of the tool so that you can see if it may be a fit for your classroom. As always, do not hesitate to reach out for support with any of these tools. I'd love to come plan a lesson with you, model the use of one of these tools in your class or co-teach a lesson with you!
SOS Strategy of the Month #1: A-E-I-O-U (Teaches citing Evidence)
1. Select an appropriate video segment for a lesson.
2. Show video segment. Important: As students watch the video, do NOT
have them take notes. If they look down to take notes, they will be
missing content. Assure them you will pause the video every few
minutes for them to jot down their thoughts related to the following
categories:
A = Adjective: List a word or two that describes something you
saw or learned.
E = Emotion: Describe how a particular part of the segment
made you feel.
I = Interesting: Write something you found interesting about the
content/topic.
O = Oh!: Describe something that caused you say “Oh!”
U = Um?: Write a question about something you learned or want
to learn more about.
3. Pause at the predetermined points to allow students 60 seconds to add
information to their list.
4. When the movie concludes, have students complete a Pair & Share of
their A-E-I-O-U statements.
5. Regroup as a class and have students share their favorite parts.

SOS Strategy of the Month #2: Half the Story (Instructional Hook)
1. Open any image relating to your topic of study on your computer and select the large image preview. Zoom in on the upper right hand corner, so that you can only see part of the image.
2. Ask students what they think they are studying today.
3. Scroll down through the image, displaying the different sections, and repeat the
question.
4. Finally scroll all the way to the left so the entire picture is displayed and repeat
the question.
2. Ask students what they think they are studying today.
3. Scroll down through the image, displaying the different sections, and repeat the
question.
4. Finally scroll all the way to the left so the entire picture is displayed and repeat
the question.
Handouts for both of these strategies are in the downstairs copy room on the bulletin board.
