Junior Class Field Trip!
On Saturday, October 19th, members of the junior class will be visiting and touring two college campuses in Albany. They will be visiting Siena College and SUNY Albany. After tours of each campus and visiting with some Lake Placid High alumni, they will take in the Homecoming football game at SUNY Albany. This trip is designed to offer students an opportunity to view two college campuses, one small, one large, and briefly observe campus life. The trip is made possible by a generous grant from the Educational Opportunity Fund of Lake Placid.

Resilience: : The importance of sleep
Today we are going to take a little detour to the intersection of biology and psychology; sleep. Adequate sleep is essential for resilience, and for teenagers that means about 9 hours of sleep per night. According to Matt Walker, a sleep researcher, sleep is a “non-negotiable, biological necessity.” Yet many of us do not get enough sleep, and this includes our children. Students have homework, sporting events, sometimes they spend too much time gaming, on YouTube, or on social media. We regularly borrow from sleep to extend our day as if sleep is an optional activity. This is not an easy problem to solve, but we need to work at it because the consequences of lack of sleep are significant and alarming. These include impaired concentration, attention, decision making, memory and learning. Immune response is weakened making a sleep deprived student more susceptible to illness. A sleep deprived teenager may have difficulty managing behavior and emotions. They may feel sad, stressed or angry. A sleep deprived person is the opposite of resilient. If we are going to raise resilient children we must pay attention to their sleep. When my kids were in high school we had many discussions about sleep. I would knock on their bedroom doors late at night and find them doing homework. I would tell them to put it away and go to sleep. Did that work? Honestly, no, not in the short term. But we continued to have discussions about sleep (we still do), and now that they are in college and graduate school they are regulating their sleep better. They understand how important it is. So, this can be a long term process, but don’t give up. Next week we will explore some ideas to help facilitate sleep. For more information check out these TedTalks.

Lake Placid Classic Marathon: Saturday, October 12th. Volunteers are needed for a water station on Route 73 in front of the Horse Show Grounds from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
"The Haunted Woods" event put on by Tri-Lakes Animal Shelter will be Saturday, October 26th at the John Brown Farm. Volunteers are needed to help set up and for the less spooky kid friendly maze: first shift 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the second shift 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Volleyball concession and gate: Tuesday, October 8th, Tuesday, October 15th and Monday, October 28th. Volunteers are needed from 4 pm- 7:15 pm. Please see Mrs. McConvey in the library for details.
