Writer's Workshop
Next week we will begin adding labels and writing to match our stories. It is extremely important for your child to know their letter names and sounds. We have been practicing every day here at school. Please continue practicing at home. Today I sent home the yellow/orange ABC letter cards or ABC Chart paper to practice reciting the letter names and sounds.
Some Ideas on how to use the cards:
- Tic-Tac-Toe: having them say the letter name and sound before they can mark that spot with an "X" or "O"
- Flash Cards
- Writing Practice: Flip a card, say the letter name and sound then practice writing with a marker/crayon/colored pencil
- Sequence: Shuffle them and then have them put them in the correct order
- Roll, Keep, Say: Make a board with six squares. Each square gets one number (#1-6). Place one letter card in each of the six boxes. Have your child roll a dice and the number they roll represents the box they have to find. Then they must say the letter name and sound before they can keep the card. Give them the card if they are correct. If they are incorrect have them practice saying the correct name and sound. Replace with new card once name and sound are mastered.
Thank you for all your support!
Literacy
This week we worked on the letter Ii. We sang our ABC chant, played Hickety Tickety to identify letters in our name, and practiced handwriting both uppercase and lowercase of each of the letters. Have your child practice writing Ii at home with markers, crayons, or a pencil!
Math
This week we were introduced to a new tool when representing numbers called Rekenreks. After seeing a tens frame card students would practice showing the same number using the beads on their Rekenreks. We will continue using them throughout the year. We also practiced handwriting the numbers 6-10 using white boards.
Please practice writing #6-10 at home as well!
Nursery Rhymes
We learned a Nursery Rhyme a day and created a Nursery Rhyme Book that was sent home today. Some of the Nursery Rhymes we learned: Twinkle Twinkle, Humpty Dumpty, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Old Mother Hubbard, Little Miss Muffet, and Jack and Jill.
Lunch Pins and Snack Time
The faster students can get through the lunch line by knowing their lunch pins, the longer they have to eat lunch! PLEASE help your child learn his/her lunch number!
Snack Time:
Our class has community snack each day. Please contribute one store bought (peanut free) snack each month for your child to share with the class (24). Please do not send in individual snacks for your child to eat. The apples and cheese were a hit this month!
*Thanks again sending snacks each month.
Bathroom Breaks
We've had quite a few close calls for the bathroom. As we only have one bathroom in the room, I try and encourage the students to use the bathroom when we take our hallway bathroom breaks (coming back from Specialists and coming in from Recess).
Please remind your child to use the bathroom when they need to go (just ask or use the bathroom sign) and try even when they don't feel like they have to go.
Cooler Weather
Just a reminder to send warm clothes (jackets, gloves, hats, scarves, etc.) for your child because they go outside for Recess and sometimes Gym.
*Please see the attached document "Winter is Coming" at the bottom of the page if you need support with getting warmer clothes for the winter.
Supplies In Need (Optional)
- Candy (I know it's early, but just wanted to have you it on your mind). If you have any leftover over candy that isn't being eaten at home after all the fall activities please send it in and I will save it for when we make Gingerbread Houses in December.
- Bags of Skelton Cheetos (we will be using them during our body unit in early November).
Thank you!

Volunteers Needed
Birthdays
At Crestview Elementary School we take time during morning announcements to highlight students who are celebrating their birthdays. This includes announcing their names and grade levels over the school wide intercom system. If for any reason you do not want your child’s name and birthday announced, please reach out to Janet Ellis, Office Coordinator, in our front office and she will make note of the request.
A reminder that due to life threatening allergies students should not be bringing birthday treats to school this year.
