GRE Family Gazette
October 6, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
We had some very special guests visit us on Friday-as you can tell from the pictures above. A HUGE thank you to our PTO for sponsoring our Columbus Zoo visit. Students had the opportunity to be up close and personal with a Bush Baby, Madagascar Cockroaches, Hawk, Penguin, Baby Otter, a Cheetah and a few more friends! During the assembly students were able to learn all about what zoo's do. This is by far one of my favorite assemblies of the year because the students can hardly contain their excitement...and neither can the teachers:)
We held our second round of parent teacher conferences on Wednesday and enjoyed another delicious dinner hosted by the PTO. We really are lucky to have such an amazing support system. As they gear up to unload 1188 mums on Monday, we'd love to have more help! Click here or follow the PTO Facebook page to stay up to date on all the PTO does for our school!
As we look at the week ahead we have so much to celebrate with Big Walnut's Homecoming! We hope you'll join in the fun by participating in our Spirit Week which concludes with the Homecoming Parade. All are welcome to join us and walk with the float. See below for details about Spirit Week and the Parade.
Here's to a great week!

2. We would like to invite parents/relatives of our students who have served in the Armed Forces to attend our annual Veteran's Day program on Friday, November 8th at 2:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please see the attached invitation for more information! We hope you can attend! Thank you!
Looking for a fun project to do you with your child? Color in a Veteran's Day ribbon and write the name of any Veteran that you'd like to honor in the center circle. Ribbons should be colored, cut out, and returned to your child's classroom teacher by November 1st. Ribbons will be hung on the entryway doors and on display for our Veterans' assembly on November 8th.
3. GRE’s Art Day will be on Friday November 8th instead of in the spring! We are looking to bring some new artists to GRE to work with our students and looking for any connections you may have in our community! On Art Day students have the opportunity to work with both a VISUAL artist to make something and a PERFORMING artist to learn how to do something.
If you are an artist or you have any connections to a visual or performing artist who you think would be interested, PLEASE share them through this GRE Art Day- Artist Connections link!
Special Spotlight: Physical Education with Mrs. Grieger
3rd and 4th grade just finished a soccer unit. We started off with working on our foot skills including passing and dribbling. One of the favorite lessons we did was create a mini putt-putt course for soccer! It was so much fun! The students were in small groups and were able to use any equipment of their choice to create a hole. They were on a time crunch to do this and the creativity I saw was absolutely amazing. Once their hole was complete, they played their hole and rotated through everyone else's for the remainder of the class. The were stellar helpers putting all the equipment away at the end too. Ask them about their hole they created and what they did do make it challenging. They ended our soccer unit playing 4 corner soccer, which is always a favorite. Next week we will be starting Floor Hockey!
2nd graders worked on foot skills in soccer, they first went on a pretend field trip to the zoo and played soccer like animals at the zoo would play. They worked on other foot skills including passing and control dribbling and then passing and shooting. We ended the soccer unit playing scooter soccer. We have also been playing a fun fitness game during each class, which they really like doing. Recently, they played toilet tag, line tag and scooter tag. Ask them which one is their favorite. Next week we will be starting Floor Hockey
Kindergarten and 1st grade: They are working on locomotor movement. Running, jumping, leaping, gallop, side-slide and skipping. In two of the lessons, we incorporated hula hoops to work on these skills. Ask them about the hula-hoop drop, spinning the hoop like a coin and passing the hoop with a partner. We also just finished exploring with bean bags. We did a bean bag slide tag fitness game, acted out different movements with the alphabet with the bean bag and did toss and catch challenge with the bean bags. The last rotation, we played a fun 'X or Blank' bean bag tag warm-up game then practiced our hand/eye coordination with one person dropping a ball with a bean bag on top of it and the partner trying to catch the bean bag after the ball bounces sending the bean bag flying up! We ended with a fun fitness game where students had to capture a bean bag on the opposite side of the gym and balance the bean bag on their head back to their home side. This was super fun!
Congrats to our Golden Spatula Winners!
This week we introduced the "Golden Spatula Award" at lunch time. This prize is awarded to one class at each grade level. Throughout the week, we look for students who are following our lunch room expectations. It was awesome to see the kids get so excited-please help us congratulate our winners for the week of September 9th.
