Nuclear Fusion: 5/6/16
By: Nathan Shirley
Lab Information:
Hi my name is Nathan Shirley and I work with Nuclear Labs where we worked for years on trying to discover how nuclear fusion could be harnessed and used as an energy source. Finally we broke through, on this day, on how to use this energy and how it could potentially be a leading producer in energy. So I am about to explain to you what this energy is so that you can grasp the great concept of this energy and why it is so very important.
How Nuclear Fusion Produces Energy
Compare and Contrast (Nuclear Fission)
Nuclear fusion and nuclear fission are different types of reactions that release energy due to the presence of high-powered atomic bonds between particles found within a nucleus. In fission, an atom is split into two or more smaller, lighter atoms. Fusion, in contrast, occurs when two or more smaller atoms fuse together, creating a larger, heavier atom. Nuclear fusion creates a lot more energy than fission making it much better energy source.
Safety
Precautions/Concerns
- Possibility of a fuel meltdown
- Radioactive Waste
- Possible release of any other harmful chemicals
Economic Impact
- No energy limitations, full access without an excess of greenhouse gasses
- Much cheaper because you get more bang for your buck
- This could lead to a cheaper cost of energy
- More people would be able to afford/access energy
