Walking Wednesday

The IDES Green Team has a Walking Wednesday program, in which students, parents, and teachers meet to walk to school on the second Wednesday of the month. This is one aspect of our participation in the Safe Routes to School program. Our next Walking Wednesday will be on November 12th. We will meet in 2 locations- the old Dickson campus on Hill Street and the corner store on Montford & Cullowhee. We meet at 7:30, start walking at 7:40, and arrive at school at 7:50. Please join us!

Self Portrait Fundraiser

Ms. Duft, the art teacher, has extended the due date for the self portrait fundraiser to this Wednesday, Nov. 12. These items make awesome gifts and a portion of the proceeds will support the art program at Dickson. Follow this link if you would like to look at the Original Works products online.

Diversity & Inclusion: A Path to Healthy Community Relations

The Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council, ACSF and Parent U are offering a free workshop this Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6:00 to 7:00 at Asheville Middle School. This is an interactive examination of the importance of diversity and inclusion in our community. Together, we can work to address discrimination and inequity for the benefit of our children, families and future.

What We Are Working On...

Math- We are describing two-dimensional figures, using exact mathematical language. In the future, we will extend our learning to describe three-dimensional figures. This week, we are using square tiles to compare the sizes of different rectangles. This work is exposing students to the concepts of area and multiplication...and they don't even realize it. That's what I love about experiential learning.

Writing- We are writing small-moment stories. Students are capturing the stories of their everyday lives and we are using mentor texts and mini lessons to improve upon them.

Reading- We are learning that characters face challenges just like we do. They have wants and continue to work for what they want, even when there are problems along the way. Learning story elements will help us retell the stories we read in meaningful ways.
