Sometimes you just can't get rid of a bomb!

This video is an oldie but a goodie from a few years back.


Everyday we walk into our workplace and carry with us our history and experiences. We even walk in carrying our latest feelings of the day. Perhaps you started with car problems, a morning argument or even not feeling well. These “BOMBS” shape who we are when we come to work each day.


The same happens with our kids. They come to us with a plethora of experiences that shape how their day is going to go. Maybe they didn’t eat, maybe they had a fight with a sibling, maybe they are worried about Mom, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma. Each day kids come to us with their own “BOMBS”.


As we think and interact with our fellow colleagues, students or bosses at work each day, think what Bombs are you carrying around. Our job is to find a way to deal with each one that does not adversely affect those around us.


What do BOMBS look like? Eye Rolling, Yelling at Kids, Spreading Rumors, Passive Aggressiveness. These are BOMBS that can blow up and hurt those around us.


BATMAN had many opportunities to get rid of his bomb, but he choose to find a way that did not affect those around him. What are some positive ways to deal with stress? A Forbes article emphasizes these 5 ways to decrease workplace stress.


1. Shift the way you think about stress.

2. Focus on helping others.

3. Start work conversations by saying something positive.

4. Turn off news alerts.

5. Focus on your “Now Step.”

Your challenge this week is to treat yourself right. Find a way to identify your BOMB and effectively get rid of it! Your Bomb does not need to impact others if you find ways to positively deal with it. Our #1 Job is to help others succeed. We can do this by first “KEEPING OUR DAY”.

Math roll out is underway. We are looking for a way to gather information about questions, materials, training needs, etc. The "math experts" will have their training on Tuesday, the 26th. They will decide how to gather this information.


Piloting of our potential new reading curriculum will begin in October.


Deconstruction of standards work will continue this school year.

Literacy

  • Promote an increase in student conversations around texts students are reading
  • Create practice profiles for CAFÉ and Conferring
  • Get some Little Free Libraries up and running in the building
  • Continue the Principal Book Clubs with 4th/5th grade and possibly look at adding 3rd grade
  • Get posters of books made to hang around the building to get excitement around reading the books

My husband Joey is a strength and conditioning coach for a Major League Baseball team. People outside professional sports often misunderstand his job and mistake him for an athletic trainer. I explain that whereas athletic trainers provide athletes with treatment to recover from injuries, strength and conditioning coaches provide a training regimen aimed at preventing injuries. Their job is to keep athletes in optimum shape so they can perform at their highest level. It’s vitally important that the athletic trainer and the strength and conditioning coach communicate regularly with each other to support their athletes in the best possible way.

At the Major League level, there is no doubt that every athlete is talented. They’ve worked tirelessly in the minor leagues and proven that they have what it takes to play at this level. However, there is a big difference between Triple-A, the highest minor league level, and “The Show.” In the Major Leagues, the competition becomes even more rigorous. Small, sometimes seemingly insignificant things can make the difference between athletes being good at their sport and being great at their sport. Each athlete is looking for that tweak that will give them the edge over others who are competing for their job.

As I shared about how hard these athletes work and explained the day-to-day routine of Joey’s job, I realized that it parallels what we do with our students in many ways. Just as my husband provides all athletes with the same two or three foundational workouts, we provide our students with two or three brief foundational focus lessons. And just as we provide our students with individualized goals, small-group lessons, and regular conferring sessions (because each child is different), Joey works to provide his athletes with individualized supplemental exercises and workouts (because each athlete is different).

This “aha!” moment reminded me of why I wholeheartedly believe in the Daily 5 and Daily 3 structures. Individualized instruction certainly benefits our students from an academic standpoint, but it also opens the door to building relationships and truly getting to know our students.

So as you reflect on past teaching practices and dive into the new teaching year I offer you this challenge. If you’re not already using the Daily 5 structure, take the leap and give it a chance. I’m certainly glad I did!

I love the staff here at CSE! I think we have the best teachers in education and the support staff is exceptional! They always put the kids first and are always willing to lend a hand (or head) when needed.

I love to spend my time outdoors. My favorite things to do are hunting, fishing, and camping. I also stay very busy with sports year round. I coach wrestling and baseball during the spring through the summer. I still love to compete and enjoy playing baseball, softball, and broomball.

My wife and I have two, going on three kids this September. Brayden is now a 5th grader, Brynley is 2.5 years old, and our new baby girl named Brielle.
