Resource of the Month
Early Childhood Outcomes (ECO) data is collected on all students ages 3 through 5 that are receiving services in Special Education (PPCD) in order to measure program effectiveness. Region 13 has created an Early Childhood Outcomes and Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines Alignment document that is available as a free download as well as for purchase on their website. The purpose of this document is to align each Prekindergarten guideline to one or more of the three Early Childhood Outcomes which are: Positive Social Emotional Skills, Acquisition and Use of Knowledge and Skills, and Use of Appropriate Behaviors to Meet Needs. This document provides educators and families with discussion prompts to explain how each outcome relates to the guideline as well as a connection between foundational skills and the Pre-K Guidelines. This resource provides modifications and adaptations for children with special needs and extends to include a developmental continuum for teachers to use as a guide in developing appropriate goals for children who are developmentally functioning below four-year-old expectations, based on the guidelines. ESC-20 will be offering a session next year on Early Childhood Outcomes in the Preschool classroom (Session #50539). This session is appropriate for General Education and Special Education Teachers.
Social Story of the Month
Many toddlers and young children bite. While biting is a typical behavior for young children, that doesn't mean it is acceptable. Young children bite for many different reasons. Understanding why your student might be biting is the first step in reducing or stopping the behavior. Children may bite when they don't have enough words to express how they are feeling. Some of the reasons young children will bite are communicating frustration, difficulty playing with others, exploration of materials/person, imitating the behavior of others, or for oral stimulation. Once you understand why and when your student is likely to bite you can teach appropriate replacement behaviors. This month's social story is about biting and what your teeth are for. This social story can be read to student(s) and guide discussions on what is okay to bite and what a student can do when they want to bite. You can access this month's social story here.
Freebie of the Month
A Tisket, A Tasket is a popular nursery rhyme that has been adapted for this month's song board. The adapted version allows for students to describe their classmates using information on a name card. Students can use the initial letter of the name to start describing whose name was drawn. Once the class guesses whose name was drawn they now can have a turn. This activity will cover the following Pre-K Guidelines: Social and Emotional Development 3.b, C.1, C.3, C,4, C.7, Language and Communication A.3, C.1, D.1, D.3, D.5, E.3, E.5, Emergent Literacy: Reading A.3, C.1, D.2, E.1, E.2. Fine Arts B.1, Physical Development A.2. Access this month's song board here.
