Mr. Glover's Weekly Update
Happy Sunday afternoon Raider Families.
I'm hoping that you all are getting a great start to your holiday season. I know many of us will be celebrating Thanksgiving this week and I am wishing you all a joyous and relaxing time with your family and friends. These past few weeks of school we have been reminding our students about many things, but most of all we taken time to reflect on the word, Gratitude. We have completed opportunities around campus where students can create a tangible reflection of gratitude. From activities in the classroom and library to take ownership in keeping our beautiful campus clean. It is an incredible visual reminder of all of the things that we individually and collectively cherish. I personally would like to say how grateful I am for this community and all of the support, well wishes for our students and educators.
Thank you, all and please have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you all on the 27th of November.
Cultural Heritage Celebrations for the Month of November
During our cultural celebrations for the month of November, we at BMMS would like to honor a significant person or event that has shaped each of these distinctive areas of focus. We hope to inspire everyone to challenge themselves to learn something new this month in an effort to increase our knowledge and understanding of culture and come from all of the diverse members of our school community.
Native American Creation Story - Told to Mr. Ben L. Squier by Santos Lopez, a Manzanita Indian
"When I was a small boy the wise men of the tribe used to call all of us youngsters together in the evening and relate to us the lore and legends that they themselves had learned in the same manner from their wise men when they were young, for this was the only way the legends and stories of our people could be kept alive. The story I will tell you now is of how the Indian came to the earth and how he got to what you call heaven."
"In the beginning the earth was all covered with water. There were two brothers who lived under the water and who wondered what was above them, so they started to climb up a high mountain. The younger brother was the first to reach the top of the mountain which extended out of the water. From there he saw how the earth was made. Insects were coming up from the inside of the mountain through its chimney, each with a little bit of rock as we see the ant built his ant hills. This was the way the earth was made."
"The older brother climbing more slowly up the mountain called out to the younger brother and asked him if he should keep his eyes open or close them as he came up through the water. The younger brother told him to keep them open. So, he opened his eyes as he came up through the water which caused him to become blind, and when he came up out of the water to where his brother stood, being unable to see, his brother told him of the strange sight of the land being built by the insects. As the older brother could not see any of this he decided to go back under the water where he was more familiar with conditions. The younger brother remained above. The rumblings and shakings of the earth are caused by the older brother stumbling around below because he could not see."

Non-ASES students attending our ASES sports events: We are all excited about the ASES Basketball and all of our after-school athletics activities that we have conducted this year. We love the positive energy and school spirit that has been exhibited by everyone in support of these events. In an effort to respect the players on the teams and family members during the competitions we are going to require that all student spectators must be accompanied by an adult parent/family member to attend the games. Again, this rule is being put in place to make sure that we are keeping the attention on the courts and not creating an environment that may become a distraction in the stands. Thank you for your support and cooperation with this decision.
2023 Giving Tree Program
We need your help and generosity for families in our BMMS community! We still need donors for;
3 Medium families (4 people each)
2 Small families (2 people each)
2 Small families (3 people each)
These are BMMS families, and we would love it if educators could talk about it in their classrooms or in their emails home to the classes. Also, would a class (or several), or a department like to adopt a family? It's $125 a person, but we have small families and medium families still left.
Click here to fill out this quick form letting us know how you would like to help. You can choose to either adopt a family, large or small, or donate gift cards or money to help. Thank you.

BMMS Career Fair - December 8, 2023
WE NEED YOUR HELP! On December 8, 2023, during both lunches, Black Mountain will be hosting our annual Career Fair in our quad. Lunch time that day will be from 11:30am-1:00pm. Stations will be set up around our quad where students can learn information about a variety of careers. We are looking for volunteers to share information about their jobs with our Black Mountain students. Our goal is to give our students a wide experience of vocations and careers and spark interest in different career pathways. If you are interested in volunteering at a table, please complete the following survey ( https://forms.gle/tvKRzCLDuFGkRjSQ7).
If you have any questions about our Career Fair, please contact Jason Schafer, counselor at jschafer@powayusd.com
