Important School Information
School Hours: 8am-3pm
Office Hours: 7:15am-4pm
Doors open: 7:20am (students are not allowed to be dropped off prior to that time)
Procedures for morning and afternoon dismissal (pictures below)
- Morning drop-off begins at 7:20am. All students are dropped off at the front of the school following the traffic pattern (entering at Archie Road, wrapping around the staff parking lot and returning to the front driveway for your child to exit at a marked cone or by a staff member). To ensure our students' safety, they may not be dropped off earlier than that time as there are no staff members on duty until 7:20am.
- Upon entering the building, students will report to homeroom. This time prior to the school day starting will be used for study hall.
- Breakfast will be grab-and-go when students enter the building.
- School dismisses at 3pm. 6th graders are picked up at the front of the school. 7th graders are picked up by the baseball field (enter at West Pine Elementary School). 8th graders are picked up in the back parking lot (staff parking area). Please note: once the 8th grade afternoon carline is at capacity, those cars will be asked to remain in the regular line until a staff member directs them to the back of the school.
- We will have staff members on duty at each of our afternoon carpool areas. Cars will be asked to pull forward and students will walk to the car. Please do not stop when you see your child; our staff will direct all cars to keep pulling forward to get as many students loaded in order to keep our lines moving.
- Our carlines are "well-oiled machines!" Even so, until our new Wildcats get used to our processes (and we work out the kinks with our elementary friends and the stoplight at 211), you can expect delays in our morning and afternoon processes for the first few weeks of school. We thank you, in advance, for your patience.
Late Arrivals
- Students arriving after 8am must sign in at the front office. A parent/guardian must accompany the student to the front door and ring bell for assistance.
Early Dismissals
- We understand that doctor/dental appointments and other appointments cannot be avoided. However, in order to protect the instructional time and limit class disruptions, no early dismissals will be allowed after 2:30pm. Students will not be called out of class early until the parent/guardian arrives to school.
Instructional Fees
- School fees are $40 (technology and instructional). There may be additional fees for encore classes. Those fees can be paid online, or your child can bring in to school and one of our staff members will receipt. Families may submit a request for waiver or reduction of fees form if they feel they cannot afford to pay these fees. This form is available through our bookkeeper, Ms. Campos.
Face Coverings
- Students, staff and visitors are required to wear face coverings in the building. No face coverings are required while outside. The BOE will revisit this decision at the 10/4 board work session. Face coverings must be worn from the top of the nose to the chin.
Bus Transportation
Students riding the bus (mornings and/or afternoons) can expect delays in pick-up and drop-off times. Routes constantly change at the start of the year due to new riders being assigned buses. Here Comes the Bus app is a great tool for parents. Visit the Parent Resources page for more information.
- If you did not make a request for bus transportation by August 5th and your child has not been assigned a bus, the school will not be able to assign students to buses. The transportation department will work to get that information to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, those students will have to be brought to school and picked up each day.
Child Nutrition Update
For the 2021-22 school year, breakfast and lunch will be free for all students.
Student Medication
All medication, prescription and/or over-the-counter drugs that parents want given at school must have a physician order accompanying the medication to school. The Request for Medication Administration in School Form (Spanish) must be filled out in its entirety, on one sheet of paper with the front page being the physician order, and the back, the parent authorization. Medication of any type must be brought to school by the parent/guardian in the original container with the Request form Medication Administration at School completed by the physician and the parent/guardian.
7th Grade Immunizations
7th grade students are reminded of the required immunizations. North Carolina Law requires a Tdap booster vaccine and meningococcal vaccine for entry into the 7th grade.

FAQ - These are the questions we've been answering the most.
2. Will clubs occur this year? Yes! Be on the lookout for information.
3. Does my child have to wear a face covering? Students, staff and visitors must wear a face covering in the building. Face coverings are not required while outside such as lunch, mask breaks, PE, athletic events, or morning/afternoon dismissal.
4. How do I pay my child's instructional/technology fees? You can pay online on our website under the parent tab, or your child can bring in check or cash the first week of school.
5. Where do I pick up my child when school dismisses? 6th grade: front of school, 8th grade: back of school (Both of these car lines are the same, so this tends to be a long line.) 7th grade: at baseball field (Enter at West Pine Elementary and proceed to the service road that runs alongside the field.) All carlines exit at the same point, so watch for Mr. Lee who directs the flow of traffic and proceed slowly.
6. What do I do if my child forgets something? Parents may drop off items at the front desk, and our staff will handle the rest.
7. How much homework can we expect in middle school? Students can expect no more than 60 minutes/night for 6th, 70 minutes/night for 7th, and 80 minutes/night for 8th. This is TOTAL - not per class.
8. Does my child really need a laptop? The answer is yes. Their work is accessed online through the Canvas platform. While we still believe in the "old school" approach (writing, notes, etc), most assignments will be submitted online.
9. What is Canvas? Canvas is the platform that will be used by all students grades 6-12 in MCS. You and your child are probably familiar with Google Classroom. Canvas is much like that, but there will be a learning curve. Our staff is aware of this and will work with their students to ensure they know and understand how to navigate through it.
10. Is middle school scary? NO! We love our middle school students. But, be prepared for the emotional roller coaster ride ahead as their bodies are growing at astronomical rates. Hang in there!
